New to network switches? What they are and what to look for
A network switch adds more wired Ethernet sockets to your home network, like a power strip does for plugs. You connect it to your router with one cable.
Do you need a network switch? Useful if your router has run out of Ethernet ports, or you want wired connections for a TV, games console, desk or NAS.
What to look for
- Enough ports, with a couple spare
- Gigabit is fine for most homes; 2.5GbE helps with a fast NAS
- Fanless designs are silent; managed switches add features most homes don't need

The full review
Where it fits
The GS308E is an eight-port Gigabit switch with a web-managed Easy Smart interface. All eight ports are RJ45 and auto-negotiate at 1G. There is no 2.5G or 10G port, and the spec sheet lists no SFP uplink. NETGEAR gives its switching bandwidth as 16Gbps.
It is a small network building block. It adds ports to a router or access point and offers some VLAN control without moving to a full managed switch.
Silent and low power
Cooling is passive. The specifications list zero fans and 0 dBA at 25°C. Maximum power consumption is 3.7W.
Owners back this up. They praise the fanless design and say it suits bedrooms and living rooms. With no fan and a low power ceiling, it works where noise or heat would be a problem. If a switch will sit in a room where people sleep or watch television, those specs matter more than most others on the list.
Management features7/10
The Easy Smart interface covers VLAN, QoS, a cable health check and loop prevention. Other listed figures are a 4K MAC address table, a 192KB buffer and jumbo frames up to 9,216 bytes.
NETGEAR's product page says 64. The 300-series datasheet says 32. If you plan a network with many VLANs, check the datasheet figure before buying.
Owners describe the feature set as limited. It is Layer 2 only, the web UI is modest, and there is no mobile app. One owner theme calls the configuration page somewhat lacking. With that feedback, the switch suits a handful of VLANs and simple traffic separation more than an elaborate design. Owners also say deployment is quick and setup is easy.
Ports and uplinksPort speeds 6/10Port count and uplinks 5/10
Eight Gigabit ports cover a small desk or a modest home network. Every port runs at the same speed. Nothing points to a dedicated uplink port or SFP slot, so any link to a router uses one of the eight RJ45 ports.
The lack of anything faster than 1G is stated plainly: no 2.5G, no 10G. A network with 2.5GbE or 10GbE devices needs a different switch.
No PoE
The GS308E has no PoE ports and no PoE budget. If your access points, cameras or phones rely on PoE, look at a switch that lists PoE instead.
Firmware and supportPort speeds 6/10Port count and uplinks 5/10Firmware and support 4/10
Owners raise two complaints here. They criticise how often firmware updates arrive. They also say the update process is less straightforward than it should be.
NETGEAR's page says limited lifetime. Amazon lists 3 years. A reseller lists 5 years. The power adapter figures also differ: 12V/1.5A on NETGEAR's page and 12V 1.0A on an Amazon listing. Confirm the warranty terms and adapter rating with the seller you buy from.
Bottom line
The GS308E is a quiet, low-power eight-port Gigabit switch with basic VLAN and QoS controls. Its fanless design and easy setup are its clearest strengths. Its limits are Gigabit-only ports, no PoE, a modest Layer 2 interface and unclear firmware and warranty details. It suits a simple home or desk network better than one that needs growth or advanced management.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners praise the fanless, silent operation, saying it suits bedrooms and living rooms.
- Setup is described as quick and plug-and-play.
- Firmware update frequency is criticised, and the update process is called less straightforward than it should be.
- Feature depth is limited: Layer 2 only, a modest web UI, no mobile app and a somewhat lacking configuration page.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need PoE for access points, cameras or phones
- Anyone with 2.5GbE or 10GbE devices or who wants SFP uplinks
- People who need advanced Layer 3 features or a polished management UI
