New to network switches? What they are and what to look for

A network switch adds more wired Ethernet sockets to your home network, like a power strip does for plugs. You connect it to your router with one cable.

Do you need a network switch? Useful if your router has run out of Ethernet ports, or you want wired connections for a TV, games console, desk or NAS.

What to look for

  • Enough ports, with a couple spare
  • Gigabit is fine for most homes; 2.5GbE helps with a fast NAS
  • Fanless designs are silent; managed switches add features most homes don't need

The full review

Where it fits

The Flex Mini 2.5G is a five-port switch from Ubiquiti. Every port is an RJ45 2.5GbE port. Each one also falls back to 1G, 100M or 10M. The model name is USW-Flex-2.5G-5, though the name is not consistent across Ubiquiti's website, documentation and controller, so check which one you are reading.

With five ports and no uplink, it suits a handful of devices.

Port speeds and switchingPort speeds 7/10Port count and uplinks 4/10

Port speed is the main reason to look at it. All five ports support 2.5GbE, so a NAS, a workstation, a 2.5GbE access point and a mini PC can each connect at that speed. Owners report a noticeable speed gain over gigabit and reliable performance.

The listed figures are 25 Gbps switching capacity, 12.5 Gbps non-blocking throughput and a 19 Mpps forwarding rate. It holds 4,000 MAC addresses. Ubiquiti lists nothing faster than 2.5GbE here, and there is no 10GbE port of any kind.

One owner theme is worth flagging. Some report connection issues with lower-quality cables. If a link refuses to negotiate at 2.5G, the cable is the first thing to swap.

Management and software7/10

The switch needs UniFi Network 8.6.9 or later. It is managed through that controller, and it supports 256 VLANs. That is enough to split a home network into several segments, such as trusted devices, IoT and lab.

Owners also report limited advanced switching features. With a VLAN count of 256 and no further feature list in the research, treat it as a simple managed switch. If you need deeper layer 2 or layer 3 controls, the research gives no sign it offers them.

The research does not give an update history or warranty terms, so the page cannot say how long Ubiquiti supports it.

Power, noise and PoE8/10

The Flex Mini 2.5G takes power over USB-C at 5V 1A, or over PoE input at 44-57 V. Maximum power is 5 W on AC/DC input and 6.4 W on PoE input. That low draw matches owner praise for low power consumption.

A retailer listing describes it as fanless. The manufacturer spec page does not say so. Owners also describe quiet, fanless operation, which fits the listing. For a bedroom, office or living-room install, that points to a silent unit.

There is no PoE output. Ubiquiti does not publish a PoE output budget, and the spec list shows none. It can be powered by PoE, but it cannot power anything else. An access point or camera on this switch needs its own injector or a PoE switch elsewhere. Owners list this alongside the five-port limit as a complaint.

Ports and uplinksPort speeds 7/10Port count and uplinks 4/10

There are no SFP or SFP+ uplink ports. Every connection goes through one of the five RJ45 ports. One of those ports will usually carry the link to your router or main switch, which leaves four for devices.

That suits a small cluster of 2.5GbE devices. It does not suit a rack with fibre runs or a setup that needs more than four downstream devices. In that case, a larger switch or a second unit is the only route the research supports.

What owners say

Praise centres on the speed gain over gigabit, steady behaviour, low power use and silence. Complaints centre on the five-port limit, the lack of PoE output, limited advanced features and the cable sensitivity noted above.

Who it suits

It suits a UniFi user who wants to add 2.5GbE to a small corner of the network with minimal noise and power draw. The fanless design, 5 W maximum draw and USB-C power make it easy to place. Its limits are equally plain: five ports, no PoE output and no uplink.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the noticeable 2.5GbE speed gain over gigabit and reliable performance.
  • Owners like the low power consumption and quiet, fanless operation.
  • Owners complain about only five ports and no PoE output.
  • Owners report limited advanced switching features and connection issues with lower-quality cables.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need PoE output for access points or cameras
  • Anyone who needs more than five ports or SFP/SFP+ uplinks
  • Users who want advanced layer 2 or layer 3 switching features
