New to network switches? What they are and what to look for
A network switch adds more wired Ethernet sockets to your home network, like a power strip does for plugs. You connect it to your router with one cable.
Do you need a network switch? Useful if your router has run out of Ethernet ports, or you want wired connections for a TV, games console, desk or NAS.
What to look for
- Enough ports, with a couple spare
- Gigabit is fine for most homes; 2.5GbE helps with a fast NAS
- Fanless designs are silent; managed switches add features most homes don't need

The full review
Where it fits
The Switch Flex Mini is a five-port Gigabit switch from Ubiquiti, managed through the UniFi Network Controller. It measures 107 x 70 x 21 mm and weighs 150 g. That is small enough for a desk, a shelf or a cramped cabinet corner. The research points to one main reason to buy it: management features in a very small switch. Owners praise the low price for a managed switch.
Ports and speedPort speeds 5/10Port count and uplinks 5/10
All five ports are RJ45 and run at 10/100/1000 Mbps. There is no SFP or SFP+ port, and no faster copper port. Ubiquiti lists a switching capacity of 10 Gbps, 5 Gbps of non-blocking throughput and a 7 Mpps forwarding rate.
Because there is no dedicated uplink, the link back to a router or core switch has to use one of the five RJ45 ports. That leaves four ports for devices. For a few wired machines, a hypervisor box and a link to the rest of the network, that is workable. For anything that needs multi-gigabit links or fibre, this is the wrong switch. The spec sheet simply does not offer them.
Management8/10
Management is the strongest part of the spec sheet. Ubiquiti lists VLAN support for up to 1,000 VLANs, plus port isolation, port mirroring and rate limiting. Management requires UniFi Network 5.12.5 or later.
The research describes control through the UniFi Network Controller and does not list a standalone web interface. So this switch makes most sense where a UniFi controller already runs, or where you plan to add one. With VLANs and port isolation on offer, it can split a small lab or home office into separate networks. Port mirroring gives you a way to capture traffic from a port for troubleshooting. If you do not want to run a controller, the research gives you no other management route to rely on.
Power and PoE
The Flex Mini has no PoE output. It cannot power access points, cameras or phones. One port does accept 802.3af/at PoE input, so the switch can take its power from a PoE source on that port. The other option is USB-C at 5V 1A. Maximum power draw is listed at 2.5 W.
There is one buying detail to check. The USB-C power adapter is included only with single-unit purchases. The 3-pack and 5-pack bundles, sold as USW-Flex-Mini-3 and USW-Flex-Mini-5, may not include one. If you buy a multipack and have no PoE source, check what ships in the box before you order.
Noise and heat8/10
The manufacturer page lists no fan. Heat dissipation is 6.824 BTU/hr, excluding PoE output, and maximum power is 2.5 W. Together those figures describe a low-power device. Owner feedback calls it compact and quiet, and a fanless design fits that. Most of those comments come from listing or editorial pages, so treat them as weak evidence rather than firm proof.
Operating temperature is listed as -5 to 45 °C. That gives some room for placement in a cupboard or a warm rack corner, within those limits.
Firmware and supportPort speeds 5/10Port count and uplinks 5/10Firmware and support 5/10
The research does not give a firmware update history or warranty terms, so there is little to say on either. What it does list is compliance: the switch is NDAA compliant and carries CE, FCC and IC certification. Ubiquiti's controller requirement also sets a software floor, UniFi Network 5.12.5 or later, so check your controller version before buying.
Verdict
The Flex Mini suits a small, UniFi-managed setup where VLANs, isolation and mirroring matter more than speed. Five Gigabit ports, no SFP uplink and no PoE output keep it narrow in scope. If those limits fit your plan, the spec sheet and owner feedback both point to a compact, low-power managed switch. If they do not, look at something with more ports, faster links or PoE output.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners praise the low price for a managed switch.
- Owners describe a compact, quiet, fanless design, though this comes mostly from listing or editorial pages and is weak evidence.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need PoE output to power access points or cameras
- Anyone who wants SFP/SFP+ uplinks or faster-than-Gigabit ports
- People who do not want to run a UniFi controller
