New to network switches? What they are and what to look for
A network switch adds more wired Ethernet sockets to your home network, like a power strip does for plugs. You connect it to your router with one cable.
Do you need a network switch? Useful if your router has run out of Ethernet ports, or you want wired connections for a TV, games console, desk or NAS.
What to look for
- Enough ports, with a couple spare
- Gigabit is fine for most homes; 2.5GbE helps with a fast NAS
- Fanless designs are silent; managed switches add features most homes don't need

The full review
Where it fits
The XGS1210-12 is a 12-port web-managed switch. It has eight RJ-45 ports at 10/100/1000 Mbps, two RJ-45 ports at 100/1000/2500 Mbps and two SFP+ cages. It has no PoE and no fan. Zyxel lists 66 Gbps of switching capacity and a 49 Mpps forwarding rate.
That layout suits a small lab or office where one or two machines need faster links and everything else runs at Gigabit.
Port speeds and uplinksPort speeds 8/10Port count and uplinks 7/10
The two SFP+ cages take 1G or 10G optics. The two copper multi-gig ports run up to 2.5GbE. The other eight copper ports top out at Gigabit. With that split, the switch suits a setup with a few fast links, such as a server, a NAS and an upstream switch, rather than a desk full of multi-gig devices.
Owner feedback on the 10G SFP side is positive. One OpenWrt reviewer says the 2.5G copper ports needed reverse-engineered driver work. That is a single report, but it matters if you plan to run OpenWrt on the switch.
Management6/10
The switch is managed through a web interface over HTTP or HTTPS. Zyxel lists port-based VLAN, 802.1p and port-based QoS, IGMP snooping, static link aggregation, port mirroring and a management VLAN. Port-based VLAN is the VLAN mode named in the specifications. No other VLAN mode appears in the specifications.
Link aggregation is static only. Digitec reviews say LACP is not supported, and owners raise this as a complaint. If your server or NAS expects LACP on the other end, this switch does not match it. For plain segmentation, mirroring and multicast handling, the listed feature set covers the basics.
Noise and heat8/10
The switch is fanless and supports IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet. Owners praise it as quiet and compact, which suits a desk, a shelf or a living space.
The flip side is heat. Owners report it runs hot under heavy load, and the lack of a fan makes that worse. Zyxel staff advise keeping the room below 25°C. They also advise ventilation when a 10G copper module is fitted. If you plan to put 10G copper modules in a warm cupboard or rack, airflow needs thought before you buy.
Firmware and variants5/10
Zyxel's download library lists firmware V2.00(ABTY.0)C0 dated 08/29/2023 and V2.00(ABTY.1)C0 dated 09/13/2023. No warranty term is given in the specification material.
The name causes confusion. Zyxel has published several variants as XGS1210-12: V1, V2, and a V2 with a -ZZ0102F UK SKU. Some third-party pages mix it up with the XGS1250-12 or XGS1010-12. Check the exact part number and version on the listing against Zyxel's specification page before ordering.
Who it suits
The 10G SFP+ cages, the 2.5GbE copper ports and the fanless design make this a sensible fit for a quiet homelab core or an aggregation switch next to a NAS. The static-only link aggregation and the lack of PoE rule it out for some jobs. If you need LACP bonding or powered devices such as access points and cameras, it will not cover them without extra kit. Plan for ventilation if the switch will carry heavy traffic or a 10G copper module.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners like that it is quiet, fanless and compact, and they value the 10G SFP ports.
- Some owners complain that link aggregation is static only, with no LACP.
- Some owners report it runs hot under heavy load, and Zyxel staff advise a cool, ventilated room.
- One OpenWrt reviewer says the 2.5G copper ports needed reverse-engineered driver work.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need LACP link aggregation
- Anyone who needs PoE for access points or cameras
- Buyers putting it in a warm, unventilated cupboard under heavy load
