New to mini PCs? What they are and what to look for

A mini PC is a full desktop computer about the size of a sandwich. It plugs into any monitor and uses far less electricity than a tower PC.

Do you need a mini PC? A good fit for everyday office work, a second computer, a living-room media PC, or a quiet home server. It isn't the right choice for serious gaming.

What to look for

  • 16GB of memory and a 500GB or larger SSD
  • Enough USB and display ports for your setup
  • Quiet cooling, and whether you can upgrade memory and storage later

The full review

Where it fits

The Mini Plus is a small desktop built around an Intel N95. It comes with 12GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD. Connectivity is WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and a LAN port. That is a complete starting point for office work, browsing, media playback or a basic always-on box.

It is not aimed at heavy workloads. Owner feedback describes it as a 15W processor for basic computing, and the same reports say it is unsuited to modern gaming. If your plans stay light, that is not a problem. If they do not, look at something with a faster chip.

Performance4/10

Reviewers frame the Intel N95 as a processor for basic computing. The 12GB of DDR5 gives a reasonable amount of room for a browser with several tabs, a few office apps or a small number of light containers. That judgement comes from the memory figure and the owner descriptions of basic computing, not from any benchmark result.

Gaming is the clearest limit. Owners say it does not suit modern games, so treat it as a machine for work and media.

Cooling, noise and power6/10

This is where owner feedback is most mixed. Reviewers describe the Mini Plus as remarkably cool and quiet, and ultra-quiet in cooling. A LinuxLinks power test found it drew the least power when idling. For a desk or a shelf in a living space, that is a real point in its favour.

The same feedback has a darker side. Reviewers report that it runs hot under sustained load, and some users report sudden shutdowns. Those two reports go together: a machine that stays quiet and cool at idle may struggle if you push it for long stretches. If you plan to run long compile jobs, transcodes or other constant heavy tasks, this is the main risk to weigh. For short bursts and idle-heavy use, the quiet and low power draw are the better match.

Memory and storage

The spec sheet gives 12GB of DDR5 and a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD. Both are part of the listed specification. Beyond those figures, the specification gives no maximum RAM and no second storage slot. Plan around what ships with it.

Ports and networkingNetworking 4/10Ports and expansion 5/10

The port list is two USB-C, two HDMI, four USB 3.2 and a LAN port. Four USB 3.2 ports cover a keyboard, mouse, external drive and a dongle or two.

Networking is WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 alongside the wired LAN port. The specification does not give a LAN speed, so check it before you buy if you need more than a basic wired connection. There is no USB4, Thunderbolt or OCuLink on the list, so do not expect external GPU or very fast external storage options from the listed ports.

Support5/10

The manufacturer's Mini Plus page states a 30-day trial and a 1-year warranty. That gives a short window to confirm the machine behaves in your setup. Given the owner reports of heat and shutdowns under load, the trial period is the sensible time to run your real workload and watch for problems.

Who it suits

The Mini Plus suits someone who wants a quiet, low-power machine for light daily use. The quiet cooling, low idle draw, 12GB of DDR5 and two HDMI outputs all point that way. It suits less well anyone who needs sustained performance, because of the reports of heat and sudden shutdowns, and it does not suit gaming. Choose it for light, intermittent work and test it early.
