The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.
Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.

Questions
How many watts do I need?
Add your graphics card's board power to your CPU's maximum power, then leave about 30% headroom. A mid-range gaming PC usually needs 650 to 750W; a high-end one 850 to 1000W. Our PC build planner works it out for you.
Do I need ATX 3.1 for a new graphics card?
Not strictly, but a native 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) cable is neater and safer than an adapter for cards that use that connector, such as most NVIDIA RTX 40 and 50 series.
