New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for
The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.
Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.
What to look for
- Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
- 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
- A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review
Where it fits
The Seasonic FOCUS GX-750 ATX 3.1 is a 750 W fully modular power supply in an ATX/EPS form factor, 140 mm deep. It targets builders who want a current GPU power connector, a compact body and a long warranty in one unit. Seasonic lists it in more than one revision, so check which version you are buying. The v4 model includes a 12+4-pin PCIe connector rated at 600 W. The v5 page lists a native 12V-2×6 cable.
Efficiency and standby draw7/10
The unit carries an 80 PLUS Gold rating. The v5 page also lists a Cybenetics Platinum rating. Two separate Cybenetics evaluations measured standby power at 0.0475 W and 0.0550 W. Standby draw that low suits a PC that stays plugged in all day, such as a homelab box or a desktop that sleeps overnight.
Cabling and connectors7/10
All cables are modular. The v4 model lists two EPS connectors, two PCIe 6+2-pin connectors and one 12+4-pin connector. It also lists eight SATA connectors spread over two cables and three Molex connectors on one cable.
With two PCIe 6+2-pin connectors and one 12+4-pin, it suits a single-graphics-card build better than a multi-GPU workstation. The eight SATA connectors cover a handful of drives. Two EPS connectors are there for boards that want them. The native 12V-2×6 cable on the v5 page means that revision needs no adapter for a card using that connector.
Noise and fan behaviour6/10
The fan is a 135 mm fluid dynamic bearing design with Digital Hybrid Fan Control. Cybenetics gives the v5 a noise grade of A. Hardware Busters lists the v4 model at A-, with a range of 25–30 dBA.
Owner feedback is more mixed. One owner found it noisier than a be quiet unit in normal mode. The same owner reported a problem after mounting the unit upside-down. Reversing the fan block made hybrid mode work well at idle. Because that report ties fan behaviour to how the unit is mounted, check the orientation in your case before you build.
Build quality and reviews7/10
Tech-legend concludes that the FOCUS GX-750 is a good power supply and an improvement on the Seasonic Focus series. Hardware Busters and Cybenetics have published test data on it, which gives buyers independent measurements to read before buying. The standby figures above come from that testing.
Warranty10/10
Seasonic covers the unit for 10 years. Every other part in the build draws its power through this one component, so a decade of cover is a real point in its favour.
Verdict
The GX-750 is a sensible choice for a single-GPU desktop or an always-on machine. Its strengths are the 10-year warranty, the Gold and Cybenetics Platinum efficiency listings, very low standby draw and a fully modular cable set with a modern GPU connector. Its limits are only two PCIe 6+2-pin connectors and one owner's report of fan noise in normal mode. If you plan a build with several 8-pin graphics cards, look at a unit with more PCIe connectors. For most single-card systems, the connector count and warranty fit well.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- One owner found the fan noisier than a be quiet unit in normal mode.
- Mounting the unit upside-down caused one owner a problem, and reversing the fan block made hybrid mode work well at idle.
Who should skip it
- Builders planning several graphics cards that each need PCIe 8-pin cables
- Buyers who want the quietest possible unit in normal fan mode
