New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for
The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.
Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.
What to look for
- Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
- 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
- A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review
Where it fits
The GX-850 is an 850 W ATX power supply from Seasonic's 2024 FOCUS GX line, released in October 2024. It is fully modular and complies with ATX v3.1, EPS 2.92 and PCIe 5.1 standards. It measures 140 x 150 x 86 mm.
That combination points at a mainstream gaming or workstation build with one demanding graphics card. The native 12V-2x6 cable and the long warranty are the main draws. The electrical measurements are more mixed, and noise reports are split.
Efficiency8/10
The unit carries an 80 PLUS Gold label. Cybenetics rates it Platinum on the v5 page. Hardware Busters reports Platinum-level efficiency of 89-91% at 115V and 91-93% at 230V.
Hardware Busters also reports low power factor readings. The efficiency figures are strong, but that note is a small mark against the unit's overall electrical behaviour.
Build quality and protections5/10
Seasonic lists a full set of protections: OCP, OPP, OTP, OVP, SCP and UVP. Hardware Busters says ripple suppression is good.
The same review is less positive overall. It calls the unit not competitive, citing loose 12 V load regulation and mediocre transient response on the 12 V and 3.3 V rails. Because of that regulation and transient result, buyers who prioritise tight voltage control should weigh this unit carefully. For a typical gaming build the protections and ripple result are reassuring, but the regulation finding is the main reason this is not a standout on quality.
Noise5/10
The fan is a 135 mm fluid dynamic bearing design with a selectable semi-passive mode. Cybenetics gives it a noise rating of A-. Hardware Busters says average noise output is not that low by the category's standards.
Owner feedback splits. Some report the fan stays off under light-to-moderate loads, which suits an idle desktop. Others complain the fan spins up too early, that the fan curve is poor, and that it is quite noisy at low load. With reports pulling in both directions, it is a less certain pick for a build where near-silence matters most.
Cables and connectors7/10
The cable set is fully modular. It includes one native 12V-2x6 cable, listed by Hardware Busters as a PCIe 12+4 pin rated at 600W. There are also three PCIe 6+2 pin connectors, eight SATA connectors and three Molex connectors.
The single 12V-2x6 plus three 6+2 pin connectors suit one high-end graphics card with a native cable. The three 6+2 pin connectors would be the limit for a build leaning on 8-pin power connectors across several cards. Eight SATA connectors cover a reasonable number of drives.
Owners report bulky or short cables, and describe the unit as heavy. In a compact case or a large tower with a distant GPU, check cable lengths before buying.
Warranty10/10
Seasonic backs the unit with a 10-year warranty. Owners single this out as a positive. For a component that sits in a system through several upgrades, the length of cover is one of the strongest points in its favour.
Verdict
The GX-850 earns its place on efficiency, protections, the native 12V-2x6 cable and the warranty. Its weak points are the loose 12 V load regulation and transient response flagged by Hardware Busters, plus fan behaviour that owners describe inconsistently. It makes sense for a single-GPU build on 230V mains where long-term cover matters. It makes less sense if the build depends on very tight regulation or a fan that stays quiet at low load.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Some owners say the fan spins up too early and follows a poor curve.
- Others report the fan stays off under light-to-moderate loads.
- The 10-year warranty is praised.
- Cables are described as bulky or short, and the unit as heavy.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who put tight 12 V voltage regulation first
- Builders who need a consistently silent fan at low load
- Anyone with a compact case who needs long, flexible cables
