New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for

The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.

Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
  • 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
  • A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review

Where it fits

The MWE Gold 850 V3 ATX 3.1 is an 850 W ATX 3.1 power supply from Cooler Master, released in June 2024. It is 80 PLUS Gold rated and fully modular. It targets mainstream and gaming builds that need a modern GPU connector.

The platform maker is LITEON, according to Tom's Hardware. That gives the unit a named OEM behind it.

Build quality and protections7/10

Tom's Hardware measured a maximum ripple of 52 mV on the 12V rail at full load. The 5V and 3.3V rails both measured 22 mV. Those are the full-load ripple figures to weigh when the PSU feeds a CPU and GPU together.

Tom's Hardware also reports that every protection it tested activated and worked correctly. For a buyer who cares about the safety net more than the headline wattage, that is a useful data point. With measured ripple on all three rails and confirmed protections, the electrical side rests on independent numbers rather than box claims alone.

Efficiency7/10

The unit is 80 PLUS Gold rated. Tom's Hardware measured a 90.5% average at 115 VAC and 92.8% at 230 VAC in cold tests at 25°C ambient. Both figures come from the same cold-test conditions, so you can read them side by side.

Noise6/10

The fan is a 120 mm unit with an HDB bearing, rated at 2500 RPM. It has a zero-RPM mode. Owners say the unit is quiet at low load, which fits with the fan not spinning in that mode. That suits office work, browsing and idle periods.

Owners also report fan noise at high load. A 2500 RPM rating shows how fast the fan can spin when the load climbs. If your system runs a heavy GPU for hours, expect to hear the fan at some point. Quiet-focused builders should weigh that against the low-load behaviour.

Cabling and connectors8/10

The MWE Gold 850 V3 is fully modular, so you connect only the cables you need. That helps airflow and tidiness in a compact case.

The connector set is:

  • One 12V-2x6
  • Four PCIe 8-pin (6+2)
  • One 24-pin ATX
  • One EPS 4+4
  • One EPS 8-pin
  • Six SATA
  • Two peripheral 4-pin

The native 12V-2x6 cable means a card that uses that connector needs no adapter. The four PCIe 8-pin connectors cover cards that use 8-pin power. With six SATA connectors, it can also power a handful of drives in a storage-leaning build. A second EPS connector helps boards that want one.

Owners point to stiff cables. One source also mentions the 90-degree PCIe connector. In a tight case, stiff cables can make routing harder, so check clearance around the GPU and motherboard before you buy.

Warranty10/10

Cooler Master gives a 10-year warranty. Owners single it out alongside the reasonable price. For a component that sits in a case for years and feeds every other part, a long warranty is a practical benefit.

Who it suits

This PSU suits a gaming PC, a workstation or a general-purpose desktop that needs 850 W and a modern GPU cable. The measured ripple, confirmed protections and 10-year warranty are the strongest reasons to shortlist it. The main trade-offs are fan noise at high load and stiff cables. If those matter more than the rest, look at other options. If not, the specifications and owner reports point to a well-rounded modular unit.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners find it quiet at low load, helped by the zero-RPM mode.
  • Fan noise becomes noticeable at high load.
  • The 10-year warranty and reasonable price are praised.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need a near-silent PSU under sustained heavy load.
  • Builders in tight cases who want flexible, easy-to-route cables.
