New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for

The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.

Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
  • 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
  • A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review

Where it fits

The ROG STRIX 1000W Gold Aura Edition is a 1000W ATX 3.0 power supply from ASUS, released in November 2022. It is a standard ATX12V unit at 180 x 150 x 86 mm. It targets gaming builds with a power-hungry graphics card, and it carries ASUS's ROG styling.

Voltage quality and protections7/10

ASUS lists a full protection set: over power (OPP), over voltage (OVP), under voltage (UVP), short circuit (SCP), over current (OCP) and over temperature (OTP). That is six protections in all.

Cybenetics has published full-load ripple figures. The 12V rail measures 10.90 mV, the 5V rail 7.79 mV and the 3.3V rail 9.92 mV. The 5VSB rail measures 16.51 mV. Twelve-volt load regulation is 0.43%. Since the 12V rail feeds the CPU and graphics card, the low ripple and tight regulation on that rail are the figures that matter most here.

Efficiency7/10

The unit holds an 80 PLUS Gold rating. That is a good level of efficiency for a gaming PC that runs for a few hours a day. It is not Platinum or Titanium, so an always-on machine that idles for long stretches would gain more from a higher tier. No low-load efficiency figures are given for this model.

Noise8/10

The cooling is a 135 mm Axial-tech fan with dual ball bearings, controlled by PWM. The fan stays off at 60% load or below. On a 1000W unit, that means it should remain silent up to roughly 600W of draw.

Cybenetics has awarded the unit its Lambda A+ noise certification, with an average under 20 dB. The combination of a large fan, a zero-fan range and that certification makes this a sound choice for a quiet build. Higher loads will bring the fan in, and the published figures do not break down noise at each load point.

Cabling and connectors7/10

The supply is described as fully modular, so a builder only needs to fit the cables the system uses. The connector count is:

  • One PCI-E 16-pin
  • Four PCI-E 8-pin
  • Five SATA
  • Four peripheral

The bundled 16-pin cable is a PCIe Gen 5 cable. ASUS says it is native and carries up to 600W. A native cable means a graphics card with a 16-pin socket can connect without an adapter. With one 16-pin connector, the supply covers one such card. ASUS also includes a 16-pin to 8+8-pin adapter in the box.

The four PCIe 8-pin connectors suit cards that still use 8-pin power. The unit has five SATA and four peripheral connectors. A storage-heavy build with many SATA drives may use up the SATA count.

Warranty10/10

ASUS gives a 10-year warranty. Given the length of the term, buyers should keep the proof of purchase safe.

Who it suits

The ROG STRIX 1000W Gold Aura Edition fits a single-GPU gaming or workstation build that needs headroom for a high-draw card. The 16-pin cable, low ripple, near-silent low-load behaviour and long warranty all point that way. It is a weaker match for anyone who wants Platinum or Titanium efficiency, or a build that needs more than one native 16-pin connection.

Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want Platinum or Titanium efficiency for an always-on machine
  • Builders needing more than one native 16-pin connector
  • Anyone planning many SATA drives beyond the five connectors
