New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for

The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.

Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
  • 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
  • A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review

Where it fits

The RM850e is a Gold-rated, fully modular 850W ATX unit from Corsair's RMe line. Hardware Busters and IgorsLab name HEC as the OEM. It uses a resonant LLC topology with DC-DC conversion and 105°C-rated capacitors. The fan is a 120mm rifle-bearing design, and the warranty runs for seven years.

Owner feedback centres on quiet running and tidy cabling. The complaints are about the 3.3V rail, low-load efficiency and the price.

Build and electrical performance

Cybenetics lists 12V full-load ripple of 36.19mV and 36.77mV across two test sets. It lists 12V load regulation of 0.83%. IgorsLab reports 12V and 5V regulation within 1%, good ripple suppression and a stable 12V transient response under high load.

Those figures point to a unit that holds the main rails steady.

Owners are less happy about the minor rails. Some report noticeable droop on the +3.3V rail and say the transient response could be better. That does not contradict the IgorsLab result for 12V, but it is a recurring owner complaint worth weighing if you run older, 3.3V-dependent hardware.

Protections7/10

Vivid Repairs lists OVP, OCP, OPP and SCP. The standard cable has no OTP. Corsair sells on-cable OTP as a separate ThermalProtect variant. If over-temperature protection matters to you, check which version you are buying.

Noise8/10

Cybenetics records an average noise level of 22.81 dBA at 115V and 22.84 dBA at 230V. The LAMBDA-A rating is 20-25 dBA. Those numbers sit in the quiet band of that rating.

Owners back this up. They describe it as not noisy and super quiet. With a 120mm fan and measured figures that low, it suits a desktop or workstation where fan noise would be a distraction.

Efficiency6/10

The unit is rated Cybenetics Gold. Cybenetics lists standby power of 0.049W at 115V and 0.119W at 230V.

The weak spot is very light load. One owner complaint says efficiency falls below 70% at 2% load. For a machine that idles at very low draw for long periods, that is relevant. For a desktop that spends most of its time at moderate or heavy load, it matters less.

Cabling and connectors7/10

The RM850e is fully modular. You plug in only the cables you need, which keeps a case tidy. Owners praise the modular cabling and the white braided look.

The listed connectors are two PCIe 8-pin (6+2), one 12V-2x6 and two EPS. It is a poorer fit for builds with several GPUs that need 8-pin power, because only two are listed.

Warranty7/10

Corsair backs the unit for seven years. That is the cover period if you plan to keep the build for years.

Price

One owner theme is that the unit is not competitively priced. That is a reported opinion, not a measured fact, so check the current price shown on this site against your own budget.

Who it suits

The RM850e suits a single-GPU desktop or workstation where quiet running, tight 12V regulation and a native 12V-2x6 cable matter. The seven-year warranty adds confidence. It is a weaker choice if you need over-temperature protection on the standard cable, a multi-GPU connector count, or strong efficiency at near-idle loads.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise how quiet it runs, calling it not noisy and super quiet.
  • Owners like the modular cabling and the white braided look.
  • Some owners report noticeable +3.3V rail droop and say transient response could be better.
  • Some owners say it is not competitively priced and report efficiency below 70% at 2% load.
Who should skip it
  • Builders who need more than two PCIe 8-pin connectors for multiple GPUs.
  • Buyers running a near-idle, always-on machine where efficiency at 2% load matters.
  • Anyone who wants over-temperature protection on the standard cable.
