New to mini PCs? What they are and what to look for

A mini PC is a full desktop computer about the size of a sandwich. It plugs into any monitor and uses far less electricity than a tower PC.

Do you need a mini PC? A good fit for everyday office work, a second computer, a living-room media PC, or a quiet home server. It isn't the right choice for serious gaming.

What to look for

  • 16GB of memory and a 500GB or larger SSD
  • Enough USB and display ports for your setup
  • Quiet cooling, and whether you can upgrade memory and storage later

Update recordLatest BIOS found is 2.41, but its release date could not be confirmed (a forum user's 03/02/2026 is an unverified update report), and no advisory names the A6; the supply-chain malware incident listed affected models that did not include the A6 in the PCWorld snippet, though the full list was not checked.
LinuxWorks on Linux. CNX Software installed Ubuntu 24.04 on the A6 without issues, with kernel 6.8.0-52-generic and the amdgpu driver, though this is a single distribution test. source

The full review

Where it fits

The GEEKOM A6 is a compact aluminium mini PC built around the AMD Ryzen 7 6800H. That chip has 8 cores and 16 threads, boosts to 4.7 GHz and has a 45W TDP. Graphics come from the integrated Radeon 680M. The machine ships with Windows 11 Pro and supports Linux. GEEKOM sells it with 16GB of DDR5 by default, with a 32GB configuration also offered. The default storage is a 1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe SSD.

Processor and graphics

Eight cores and 16 threads give this machine room for running several things at once, such as a development environment, containers and a browser full of tabs. Reviewers describe it as a sweet spot between price and performance.

The complaints are specific. Owners and reviewers report that the CPU slows during long full-load runs, and that gaming graphics are weak. With the Radeon 680M as the only graphics option, it makes sense to treat it as a general-purpose machine rather than a gaming box. The slowdown under sustained load also points away from long rendering jobs as a main use.

Memory and storage

This is where the A6 is easiest to recommend. Memory sits in dual SO-DIMM slots, so it is not soldered, and the maximum is 64GB of DDR5. Buying the 16GB model does not lock you into 16GB. With that ceiling, it has room for more containers or a few virtual machines as workloads grow.

Storage has two slots: one M.2 2280 NVMe and one M.2 2242 SATA. The stock 1TB Gen4 drive uses the NVMe slot, and the second slot gives you a place for another drive. The 2242 slot is SATA, so it is a separate class of slot from the NVMe one.

Networking and portsNetworking 6/10Ports and expansion 7/10

Wired networking is a single 2.5GbE port, with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 alongside it. The research lists only one RJ45 port. A router or firewall build that needs two wired interfaces would need extra hardware.

The rear panel has dual HDMI 2.0, USB4, a USB-C port with Power Delivery, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, the RJ45 jack and DC in. The front adds USB-A ports, a 3.5mm headset jack and an SD card reader. Owners praise the port selection. The dual HDMI outputs and USB4 make a multi-display desk setup plausible. GEEKOM's listed ports do not include OCuLink.

Noise and cooling5/10

The A6 has an active fan and is not fanless. Tom's Guide says it is quiet in normal use and louder under heavy multitasking. Owner reports match that: the fan becomes audible under heavy load such as renders, uncapped gaming and multitasking. For light desktop work or a lightly loaded homelab box, that suggests little noise most of the time. If it will sit near you while running heavy jobs, expect to hear it. The research gives no idle power draw figure, so it does not support a claim about running costs for an always-on box.

Build and support7/10

Owners praise the aluminium build. GEEKOM backs the machine with a 3-year warranty. It ships with Windows 11 Pro and supports Linux, which matters if you plan to wipe it for a server or workstation install. GEEKOM has published no end-of-support date, and the research does not say how often BIOS updates arrive.

Who it suits

The A6 fits someone who wants a capable small desktop, a development machine or a modest home server, and who values room to add RAM and a second drive later. The RAM ceiling, the extra M.2 slot and the warranty are the clearest strengths. The limits are equally clear: a fan that rises under sustained load, CPU slowing in long full-load runs, weak gaming graphics and one wired network port.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Reviewers praise it as a sweet spot between price and performance.
  • Owners like the aluminium build and the range of ports.
  • The fan becomes audible under heavy load such as renders, uncapped gaming and multitasking.
  • The CPU slows during long full-load runs, and gaming graphics are weak.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want a fanless or silent machine under heavy load
  • Gamers or anyone running long renders who need sustained peak performance
  • Anyone building a router or firewall that needs two wired ports
