The processor (CPU) is the main chip that runs a computer. It's chosen when building or upgrading a desktop PC.
Do you need a processor? Only if you're building or upgrading a desktop. It must match your motherboard's socket.
What to look for
- The right socket for your motherboard (AMD AM5, Intel LGA1700/1851)
- Whether a cooler is included
- Built-in graphics if you won't fit a graphics card

This list is still filling up
We won't call a list "the best" until at least 2 of them are ones we'd buy. None of the 5 desktop processors we've reviewed so far are.
Questions
Which CPU is best for a homelab server?
One with low idle power, enough cores for your VMs, and integrated graphics with hardware video encoding if you run Plex or Jellyfin. ECC memory support is worth having for ZFS.
Does a CPU come with a cooler?
Some do and some don't, and it varies by model. The specification lists whether a cooler is included.
