New to mini PCs? What they are and what to look for

A mini PC is a full desktop computer about the size of a sandwich. It plugs into any monitor and uses far less electricity than a tower PC.

Do you need a mini PC? A good fit for everyday office work, a second computer, a living-room media PC, or a quiet home server. It isn't the right choice for serious gaming.

What to look for

  • 16GB of memory and a 500GB or larger SSD
  • Enough USB and display ports for your setup
  • Quiet cooling, and whether you can upgrade memory and storage later

The full review

Where it fits

The E4 pairs a Ryzen 5 3550H with 16GB of DDR4 and a 512GB NVMe drive. Owners describe it as strong value for the price. The hardware points to a desk PC, a media or office machine, or a small home server for light jobs. The sections below cover where the specifications help and where owners report limits.

CPU and graphics

The Ryzen 5 3550H has four cores, eight threads and boosts up to 3.7GHz. Graphics are Radeon Vega 8, built into the chip. The manufacturer's spec table lists it as a 2019 Zen+ mobile part on 12nm with a 25W TDP. Owners call it dated, a Ryzen 3000-era chip, and some report lag under heavy load. With four cores and that owner feedback, it suits browsing, scripting, admin tasks and a handful of containers better than sustained compute work.

Memory and storage

The machine ships with one 16GB DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM. The manufacturer's page gives a maximum of 32GB. Storage is a 512GB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 3.0 x4. Because the memory is a removable module rather than soldered, the RAM can be changed later, up to that 32GB limit.

Networking5/10

There are two RJ45 ports, both gigabit. Owners praise the dual LAN, and two wired connections give room to keep two networks apart on one box. Nothing faster than gigabit is listed. Wireless is Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) with Bluetooth 5.0, and owners count Wi-Fi 5 rather than Wi-Fi 6 as a shortfall. If you plan to use the machine wired, the wireless side matters less.

Power, heat and noise4/10

One owner measured 17W at idle, 17-40W while browsing and about 100W under heavy work. The power adapter is 19V at 3.42A. A 17W idle draw counts for more on a machine left running all day, so factor it in if this will be always on.

The unit has a fan. One reviewer says it becomes audible during sustained heavy work such as long video exports. For light, intermittent use, that matters less than for long renders or builds.

Ports and displays6/10

The port list covers three USB 3.2 Type-A, one USB 2.0 Type-A, two RJ45, one HDMI, one DisplayPort, a Type-C video output and a 3.5mm combo jack. Owners praise the triple-display output.

Check the Type-C detail before you rely on it. The manufacturer's product page gives 4K@60Hz, while the user manual says 1080P@60Hz. The two do not agree.

Support and reliability5/10

BOSGAME runs a BIOS download centre and a support FAQ, so firmware and help pages exist. One reviewer reports the machine powering down after about an hour. That comes from a single source, so treat it as one report rather than a pattern, but it is worth knowing about if you plan unattended use.

Who it suits

The E4 suits someone who wants a cheap, compact x86 machine with two gigabit ports and several display outputs, and who accepts an older CPU. It is a reasonable base for light home services and desk work. If the box will run flat out for long periods, or sit always on where idle draw counts, the owner-reported fan noise, 17W idle figure and dated chip all weigh against it.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners describe it as strong value for the price.
  • Dual gigabit LAN and triple-display output draw praise.
  • The Ryzen 3000-era CPU is seen as dated, with lag under heavy load.
  • Wi-Fi 5 rather than Wi-Fi 6 is called a shortfall, and the fan becomes audible under sustained load.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want 2.5GbE or faster wired networking
  • Anyone running long, heavy workloads who needs a quiet fan
  • Buyers who need low idle power for an always-on server
