New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.
Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.
What to look for
- Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
- A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
- Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

The full review
Where it fits
The BE650G2-UK is a compact, floor or wall mount UPS rated at 650 VA and 400 W. It is a standby (offline) design with a sine waveform listed. Its compact form factor and wall or floor mounting suit a desk, shelf or under-desk spot.
It measures 130 mm wide and 365 mm deep and is finished in black. The mains cable is 1.83 m long. Operating temperature runs from 0 to 40 °C, so a cupboard or under-desk spot is fine as long as it stays within that range.
Capacity6/10
The unit is rated at 400 W, with a maximum current of 6 A. A single power-hungry workstation or a multi-drive server is a different matter, because the full-load runtime is short. Efficiency is listed at 80%.
Input operating voltage runs from 180 V to 266 V, and output voltage is 220 to 230 V. That input window is wide, which suits it to mains that wanders a little. Frequency is 47/63 Hz on both input and output.
Topology and waveform4/10
The BE650G2-UK is a standby (offline) unit. It lists a sine waveform, which is a point in its favour for power supplies that dislike rough output. Buyers who specifically want a line-interactive or online design should look at a different model.
It also has cold start, so it can power up from battery when mains is absent. An automatic battery test is built in.
Runtime and battery5/10
APC quotes 2.6 minutes at full load of 400 W. APC doesn't publish a half-load figure. With that short full-load number, and an owner complaint about limited backup time for high-power devices, the unit makes more sense as a ride-through and clean-shutdown device than as a way to keep gear running through long outages.
The battery is sealed lead-acid and user-replaceable. It is also listed as hot-swap. The replacement is the APCRBC110, sold separately, and the unit takes one. Maximum battery life is given as five years, and recharge time is 16 hours.
One owner reports the battery needed replacing without any front-panel warning. The unit does include audible alarms for on-battery, low-battery and overload conditions, plus LED indicators. Owners also praise the build and say replacement batteries are available and reasonably priced. That combination suggests it is worth putting a calendar reminder against the battery's age rather than waiting for a warning.
Connectivity and integration5/10
The only data connection is a USB Type A port. There is no SmartSlot, no SmartConnect port and no management card in the box. A NAS or server that can talk to a UPS over USB can use that single port. Anyone who wants network-based monitoring of the UPS itself will not get it from this model, since no network card is listed.
Outlets and build7/10
There are eight BS 1363 outlets. Six give battery backup and surge protection. Two give surge protection only. That split lets a buyer keep a printer or charger on the surge-only pair without drawing on the battery.
The surge energy rating is 310 joules. Surge protection includes DSL line protection. Noise is rated at 45 dB, and the warranty is two years on both the unit and the battery. Certification covers CE and EAC, with RoHS compliance.
Who it suits
It suits a small home setup where the aim is a few minutes of cover and a tidy shutdown. The UK sockets, the replaceable battery and the warranty covering the battery are its practical strengths. The short full-load runtime and the standby design mark its limits.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- One owner found the battery needed replacing without any front-panel warning.
- Owners report limited backup time when powering high-power devices.
- Owners praise the solid, reliable build and say replacement batteries are available and reasonably priced.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need long runtime for power-hungry kit
- Anyone who wants network monitoring through a management card or SmartSlot
- Buyers who want a line-interactive or online UPS
