New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.

Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
  • A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
  • Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

The full review

Where it fits

The Ellipse PRO 850 IEC is a line-interactive UPS rated at 850 VA and 510 W. It has three C13 outlets plus one surge-only C13 outlet, and a USB port for monitoring. There is no Ethernet port and no network card. That points it at a single desk or rack-side setup, where one connected machine runs the monitoring software over USB.

Capacity7/10

The unit is rated at 510 W, and Eaton lists 97% efficiency at maximum load. The spec sheet gives no load figures for specific equipment, so add up the rated draw of the devices you plan to connect and check the total against that 510 W figure.

The outlet layout also shapes what you can protect. Three outlets are battery-backed. The fourth is surge-only, so it gives protection from surges but no battery backup. Put the devices that must stay up on the battery outlets. If you have more than three devices that must stay up, this model won't cover them directly.

Topology and output6/10

The topology is line-interactive. Eaton lists an output voltage range of 176-284 V.

NAS and server integration8/10

The USB port is HID compliant and works with Eaton UPS Companion software.

USB is the only listed data connection. There is no network card, so any machine that needs to talk to the UPS must be connected to it by USB.

Runtime and battery5/10

Eaton lists 9 minutes at half load. Half of the 510 W rating is 255 W. The spec sheet gives no runtime figure for lighter loads, so you can't read a longer runtime from it. Nine minutes suits a controlled shutdown more than riding out long outages.

The battery is a single 12 V / 9 Ah sealed lead-acid (VRLA) unit, and it is user replaceable. That helps long-term ownership. One owner reported replacing the battery after four years of daily 16-hour use, which is a heavy duty cycle. Treat the battery as a consumable and budget for a replacement.

Noise and build7/10

Eaton rates noise at under 25 dB at 1 m. Owners say the fan runs only when mains power is cut, and reviewers describe it as quieter than the 1200 model. That suits a UPS sharing a room with you or sitting under a desk. Owners also describe installation and use as easy.

The warranty is three years. One buyer reported a unit that stopped starting when it was under four years old. That is a single report, not a pattern, but it is a reminder to keep the warranty paperwork and check the battery periodically.

Who it suits

With 510 W, a HID USB port and a replaceable battery, it fits a small setup of up to three battery-backed devices where USB monitoring from one machine is enough. With only 9 minutes at half load and no network card, it is a weaker match for anyone who wants extended runtime or remote network management. Check the output waveform with Eaton and your equipment's compatibility with the UPS before buying.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners say it is quiet, with the fan running only when mains power is cut.
  • Reviewers describe installation and everyday use as easy.
  • One buyer reported the unit stopped starting before it was four years old.
  • One owner replaced the battery after four years of daily 16-hour use.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need network-card or Ethernet-based UPS management
  • Anyone needing more than a few minutes of runtime at moderate load
  • Users with more than three devices that all need battery backup
