New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.
Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.
What to look for
- Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
- A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
- Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

The full review
Where it fits
The BR1600MI is a 1600 VA / 960 W line-interactive UPS from APC. The 960 W rating is the capacity to measure your own load against. The spec sheet gives no typical power draw for a NAS, router or switch, so add up the rated draw of your own equipment and compare the total with 960 W. Then check that total against the runtime figures below, because runtime depends heavily on load.
Runtime and battery7/10
APC's figure is 1 h 8 min at 100 W. A retailer lists 159 min at 40 W, 26 min at 240 W and 17 min at 335 W. Runtime at half load, 480 W, is not published. Those numbers show runtime falling steeply as load rises, so a light homelab load gets the most from this unit.
The 100 W figure is the manufacturer's. The 40 W, 240 W and 335 W figures come from one retailer, so they are less firmly sourced.
The battery is sealed lead-acid, 24 V nominal. The replacement cartridge is APCRBC166, and it is user-replaceable without tools. Expected battery life is 3-5 years and recharge time is 16 hours. With a 3-5 year life, budget for a replacement cartridge, and the tool-free swap keeps that job simple. You can search for the cartridge by its APCRBC166 code when the battery nears the end of its expected life.
The waveform question5/10
Some retailers list a stepped approximated sinewave and others list sine. No manufacturer page states it. Retailer listings are the only source for either description, so neither can be treated as confirmed. The topology is confirmed as line-interactive, but the output waveform stays unresolved. If your equipment is sensitive to stepped output, confirm the waveform with APC before buying.
NAS and server integration4/10
The spec lists a USB port. No USB HID or NUT compatibility was found for this model. If safe shutdown is the main reason you want a UPS, check compatibility first.
Outlets and build7/10
There are eight IEC C13 outlets. Six give battery backup and surge protection. Two are surge-only. Input is IEC C14. With six battery-backed outlets, a NAS, router and switch can sit on backup while less critical gear uses the surge-only pair.
The surge energy rating is 509 J. The warranty is 2 years and the unit carries CE certification. The model's EAN is 0731304346913, which helps when matching listings.
Who it suits
The BR1600MI suits buyers who want a 960 W rating and a battery they can replace themselves, and who are happy to confirm the waveform and USB behaviour with APC before relying on it. Anyone who needs those answers on paper should resolve them before ordering.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need confirmed automatic NAS shutdown over USB HID or NUT
- Buyers with equipment that requires a confirmed pure sine waveform
- Buyers who need a published runtime at half load
