New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.

Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
  • A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
  • Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

The full review

Where it fits

The 5S 1000i is a 1000 VA / 600 W line-interactive UPS from Eaton. It has four battery-backed outlets with surge protection and four surge-only outlets, so it covers a handful of devices.

Capacity and outletsCapacity 7/10UK outlets and build 7/10

The unit has eight IEC C13 outlets and a C14 input. Four outlets are battery-backed with surge protection. The other four are surge-only. That split matters for planning. Put the equipment that must stay running on the battery-backed four. Put printers, monitors or chargers you don't need to keep running on the surge-only four.

IEC outlets mean you connect equipment with C13 leads rather than plugging UK three-pin plugs straight in.

Topology6/10

Eaton lists the 5S as line-interactive. If you run equipment with active power factor correction supplies, check the Eaton datasheet for the waveform before buying. Treat this as an open question rather than a fault.

NAS and server integration8/10

The unit has one USB port that is HID compliant, and a USB cable is supplied. That is the only data connection listed. The HID listing is a good sign, but it isn't a compatibility list.

There is no network card and no SNMP. With a single USB port, one machine can talk to the UPS directly. If you have several machines that need to shut down, you would have to share the UPS status from that one host over your network.

Runtime and battery7/10

Eaton rates runtime at 14 minutes at 50% load and 2 minutes at full load. Those two points are all the runtime data available, so work out your own load before relying on either figure.

The battery is two 12 V / 7 Ah sealed lead-acid cells, and they are user replaceable. That means you can swap them yourself rather than sending the unit away. The warranty is 2 years and includes the batteries, so the cells are covered for that period.

Size and noise

The unit measures 250 × 87 × 382 mm (H × W × D) and weighs 9.22 kg. Check those dimensions against the space you have in mind before ordering.

Noise figures conflict. The UK Eaton page rates it below 25 dB at 1 m. A retailer, Tradeinn, lists 40 dB. Owner reports are cross-model rather than about this exact unit. They mention fan noise while charging and running, and quiet operation outside charge mode. If the UPS will sit in a bedroom or home office, treat fan noise as a possibility.

Verdict

The 5S 1000i pairs a 600 W rating with four battery-backed outlets, a HID USB port, replaceable batteries and a two-year warranty that covers them. The gaps are the lack of a network card or SNMP, an unlisted waveform and unclear noise figures. For a single-host setup that wants a clean shutdown, the HID USB port and cable fit that need. For anything needing network management, look elsewhere.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners report fan noise while the unit charges and runs, though these reports cover Eaton models generally rather than this one.
  • Owners praise quiet operation outside charge mode, again in cross-model reports.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need a network card or SNMP monitoring for several servers
  • Anyone who needs the output waveform confirmed before connecting sensitive equipment
  • People placing a UPS in a bedroom or quiet room who are sensitive to fan noise
