New to Wi-Fi routers and mesh systems? What they are and what to look for
A router connects your home to the internet and creates your Wi-Fi network. Mesh systems use several units around the house for stronger signal everywhere.
Do you need a Wi-Fi router? Your broadband provider gives you one, but a better router can fix weak Wi-Fi, slow speeds in far rooms and frequent drop-outs.
What to look for
- Wi-Fi 6 or newer
- Mesh if your home is large or has thick walls
- Regular security updates from the maker

The full review
Where it fits
The Deco S7 is a three-unit mesh system built on Wi-Fi 5. It is a dual-band AC1900 design: 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with 3x3 MU-MIMO. TP-Link rates the 3-pack for up to 5,600 sq ft. That makes it a coverage-first kit for larger homes rather than a speed-first one.
The box holds three units, three power adapters, one Ethernet cable and a quick guide. Each unit comes in white or black and has LED indicators and a reset button.
Wi-Fi and radio hardware
The S7 supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. The top standard is Wi-Fi 5. The combined maximum data rate is listed as 1900 Mbit/s, which is the two bands added together.
Each unit has three internal, omni-directional antennas. BeamForming and MU-MIMO are both listed. Transmit power under CE rules is below 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and below 23 dBm on 5 GHz.
There is no 6 GHz band and no third radio listed. With two bands, the kit suits ordinary home use such as streaming, browsing and video calls. Homes with many busy devices should keep that limit in mind.
Wired ports5/10
Every unit has three Gigabit Ethernet ports, and each port works as WAN or LAN. That gives you a wired connection for a PC, console or switch at each node, and lets any node take the incoming connection. The ports are Gigabit only, so the wired side tops out at gigabit speeds. With a Gigabit-only design, the S7 suits connections up to around that speed.
Software and security4/10
The feature list covers the basics and a little more. It includes an SPI firewall, access control, parental controls and QoS. There is one guest network on 2.4 GHz and one on 5 GHz. VLAN is listed. Networking options include IPv4 and IPv6, port forwarding, UPnP, PPPoE, dynamic and static IP, IGMP proxy and snooping, and TP-Link DDNS. Android and iOS are the listed supported mobile operating systems.
For wireless security, the listed options are WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal. WPA3 does not appear in the specifications. If WPA3 matters to you, check that before buying.
The firmware page lists Deco S7 (EU) V1.40, build 20250808, published with a stability and security note. That shows firmware work has continued recently. Against that, the UK product page carries a "Deco S7 End of Life" heading. A product labelled that way may see fewer updates in future, which matters for a device that sits on the edge of your network.
Coverage and layout7/10
Three nodes covering up to 5,600 sq ft gives you room to spread units across several floors or a long property. Because each node has three Gigabit ports, you can also wire devices near each unit.
Who it suits
The S7 suits a larger home that needs wide coverage from three nodes. Guest networks, parental controls and QoS are all listed. VLAN support adds a little for people who want to separate traffic.
It is a weaker fit if you want Wi-Fi 6 or newer, WPA3, or multi-gig wired ports. The End of Life heading on the UK page also counts against anyone planning to keep a mesh system for many years.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who want WPA3 or a Wi-Fi 6, 6E or Wi-Fi 7 mesh
- Anyone needing 2.5GbE or faster wired ports
- People who want a product with a clear long-term support outlook
