New to Wi-Fi routers and mesh systems? What they are and what to look for

A router connects your home to the internet and creates your Wi-Fi network. Mesh systems use several units around the house for stronger signal everywhere.

Do you need a Wi-Fi router? Your broadband provider gives you one, but a better router can fix weak Wi-Fi, slow speeds in far rooms and frequent drop-outs.

What to look for

  • Wi-Fi 6 or newer
  • Mesh if your home is large or has thick walls
  • Regular security updates from the maker

Update recordThe newest firmware (3.0.0.6.102_40497, 2026-10-12) appears only in a forum repost and is not confirmed on ASUS's site; no CVEs name this router, and the listed security fixes come without formal advisory IDs.
LinuxNot confirmed. No source found on NUT, Linux drivers, or mainline kernel support; one forum user's claim of a newer kernel in the SDK is anecdotal.

The full review

Where it fits

The RT-BE92U is a single Wi-Fi 7 router, not a mesh kit. The box holds one router, a wall-mount kit, an RJ-45 cable, a power adapter, a quick start guide and a warranty card. ASUS lists AiMesh support, with the router able to act as primary or node, so a larger home can be covered by building an AiMesh system.

Wi-Fi 7 across three bands8/10

The router is tri-band. The 2.4 GHz band is 3x3, while the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands are both 2x2. ASUS rates the maximums at 1032, 2882 and 5764 Mbps respectively. It also lists support for older standards, including 6E. These are rated maximums, not what a given home will see.

Owner feedback on speed is positive. Reviewers praise its high-speed internet performance, and one found it consistently faster than the TP-Link Archer BE550. The picture on range is less good. Owners report poor 6 GHz range and a faster signal drop-off at 40 ft. With a single unit in the box and those reports, it suits a smaller space, or a layout planned around AiMesh, better than a large house served by one router.

Wired ports9/10

There is one 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port and one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, and either can serve as the WAN connection. Three further 2.5 Gbps LAN ports sit alongside them. If one of the two WAN/LAN ports takes the internet connection, four LAN ports remain.

For a homelab, that gives a 10 Gbps port for a server or NAS and a set of 2.5 Gbps ports for other wired devices. The listed ports are all multi-gig, and the research lists no 1 Gbps ports.

Software and security7/10

The feature list is broad. Wireless security covers WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, OWE and WPS. AiProtection adds Malicious Site Blocking and Two-Way IPS, and the firewall supports DNS-over-TLS. The router offers up to three guest networks.

For remote access, the VPN server supports IPSec, OpenVPN, PPTP and WireGuard. The VPN client supports L2TP, OpenVPN, PPTP and WireGuard. ASUS also lists its Instant Guard app. ASUS describes the security as subscription-free, using AiProtection Pro powered by Trend Micro, so the listed protections don't depend on a paid plan. ASUS's listed features don't mention VLAN support, which matters if you plan to segment a network that way.

The UK support page lists firmware releases from December 2024 to 12 October 2026, the latest being version 3.0.0.6.102_40497. That shows an ongoing update record on the support page.

What owners report

Feedback on firmware is split. Some owners complain of unstable, buggy firmware and frequent disconnections. One Best Buy owner called the firmware absolutely horrible and reported CPU spikes to 100%. A later reviewer said the router worked as advertised. Given that split, expect that results may vary between households and firmware versions.

Other complaints cover smart-device connectivity problems and difficult mesh setup. One reviewer says the Asus Router app could be easier for beginners. On the positive side, owners call the AiMesh system effective, and they praise quiet, fanless operation. One review says it stays only slightly warm under load.

Who it suits

The RT-BE92U suits buyers who want multi-gig wired connections and a long VPN and security feature list without a subscription. The 10 Gbps port, the 2.5 Gbps ports and the WireGuard and OpenVPN server options make it a fit for a wired-heavy home or homelab. Buyers who need strong 6 GHz range, simple mesh setup or a router that owners agree is stable should weigh the complaints above before buying.
