New to graphics cards? What they are and what to look for

A graphics card (GPU) draws the picture for games and speeds up video editing and AI tools. It fits inside a desktop PC.

Do you need a graphics card? Needed for modern PC gaming and running AI models at home. Not needed for office work, browsing or video streaming.

What to look for

  • Enough video memory: 12GB or more for new games and AI
  • That it physically fits your case and power supply
  • Noise and power use

The full review

Where it fits

The MSI RTX 3060 Ventus 2X 12G OC is a dual-slot NVIDIA card with 12GB of GDDR6. It uses the RTX 3060 GPU with 3584 CUDA cores and a PCI Express Gen 4 interface. The OC version has a boost clock of 1807 MHz.

The specification points to a general-purpose card for a desktop, a small workstation or a homelab box. It asks for little in the way of power and space, and it brings a useful amount of video memory. MSI lists a single 8-pin power connector and a recommended 550W PSU.

Video memory7/10

The card carries 12GB of GDDR6 on a 192-bit bus, running at 15 Gbps. At 12GB, smaller models have room to load, but models that need more than 12GB will not fit on the card. The bus width and memory speed are the manufacturer's listed figures for that 12GB.

The card uses an NVIDIA GPU with 3584 CUDA cores. The listed specifications don't include AV1 encode details, so check that separately if Plex or Jellyfin transcoding is your main use.

Size and power8/10

The card measures 235 x 124 x 42 mm and takes two slots. Check the 235 mm length and the two-slot width against the space in your case before you buy.

MSI rates board power at 170W and recommends a 550W PSU. Power comes through a single 8-pin connector. With only one 8-pin cable to find, it should be straightforward to fit into an existing build, since a single 8-pin is the whole power requirement.

Cooling and noise7/10

MSI describes the cooler as TORX FAN 3.0 with thermal pads on a custom PCB. Those are manufacturer claims. Owner feedback lines up on one point: quiet cooling gets repeated praise.

That matters if the card goes into a machine that sits in a living space, an office or a rack at home. A 170W rating also keeps heat output modest, though the spec sheet gives no temperature figures to go on.

Outputs and API support6/10

The card has three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and one HDMI output. The HDMI port is HDMI 2.1 and supports 4K at 120Hz. The card can drive a maximum of four displays.

For graphics APIs, MSI lists OpenGL 4.6 and DirectX 12. A retailer table also lists Vulkan. The three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI output together account for the four-display maximum. The single HDMI port means a multi-screen setup leans mainly on DisplayPort.

Value

Owner opinion on value is mixed. Some call it solid for the price. Others criticise it as overpriced. Since the card is an RTX 3060 with 12GB, its appeal rests on the memory capacity, the compact body and the quiet cooling, rather than on being the fastest option in any lineup.

The OC label refers to the 1807 MHz boost clock. The spec sheet gives no benchmark figures, so the specification sheet is the only guide to how much that clock matters in practice.

Who it suits

This card makes sense for someone building or upgrading a small, quiet machine with a single 8-pin cable available. It also fits a user who wants 12GB of video memory for smaller local AI models and a standard set of display outputs. Anyone who needs more than 12GB of memory, or more than one HDMI port, should look at the specifications of other cards before buying.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners repeatedly praise the quiet cooling.
  • Opinion on value is split: some call it solid for the price, others say it is overpriced.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers running local AI models that need more than 12GB of video memory
  • Anyone who wants several HDMI outputs rather than three DisplayPort and one HDMI
  • Buyers who want published warranty or sustained performance figures before they commit
