New to graphics cards? What they are and what to look for

A graphics card (GPU) draws the picture for games and speeds up video editing and AI tools. It fits inside a desktop PC.

Do you need a graphics card? Needed for modern PC gaming and running AI models at home. Not needed for office work, browsing or video streaming.

What to look for

  • Enough video memory: 12GB or more for new games and AI
  • That it physically fits your case and power supply
  • Noise and power use

The full review

Where it fits

The GIGABYTE RTX 5070 GAMING OC 12G is a full-size, triple-fan RTX 5070. It has 6144 CUDA cores, a 2512 MHz base clock and a 2625 MHz OC boost. The memory is 12GB of GDDR7 on a 192-bit bus at 28 Gbps. Owners praise its 1440p performance, and that matches the tier of GPU on the spec sheet. It is a gaming card first. It also has CUDA support if you want to run GPU-accelerated tools.

Performance6/10

The overclock is a factory setting, not a different GPU. The boost clock is 2625 MHz. Reference TDP is 250 W. Owner feedback focuses on 1440p gaming, which is where a 12GB card with this core count sits comfortably. The card uses a PCI Express x16 5.0 interface. It supports DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.6 and NVIDIA G-SYNC. The maximum listed resolution is 7680 x 4320, with up to four displays.

Video memory5/10

Twelve gigabytes is the main limit to think about. It is enough for current 1440p gaming, which is where owners report good results. For local AI work, the amount of video memory sets how much of a model you can keep on the card. With 12GB and a 192-bit bus, this card suits smaller models and light experimentation more than large ones. If memory capacity is your priority, check that figure before anything else. CUDA support is listed, so NVIDIA-based AI tools are at least an option.

Cooling and noise7/10

Gigabyte uses its WINDFORCE 3X cooler with three fans. Owners repeatedly report that the card stays cool under gaming load. HWCooling measured the card in Silent BIOS mode under load. The fans reached about 1430 to 1500 RPM, at about 33.8 to 34.8 dBA. The card has dual BIOS with Performance and Silent modes, so you can pick between them. The spec sheet gives no measurement for Performance mode, so the Silent figures are the only noise numbers to go on.

Size, power and connectors5/10

This is a large card. It measures 327 mm long, 132 mm wide and 56 mm deep, and weighs 2 kg. The listing describes it as a full-height, full-length two-slot design. Check your case's maximum GPU length before buying, and note the 56 mm depth too. With a 327 mm body, compact cases will need careful measuring.

Power comes through one 16-pin 12V-2x6 connector. Gigabyte includes a 2x 8-pin adapter in the box, which helps if your power supply lacks a native 16-pin cable. The minimum system power supply is listed as 750 W. That is a firm requirement to plan around in an older build.

Video outputs are three DisplayPort 2.1 ports and one HDMI 2.1b port. That covers several monitors without adapters. There is no DVI output.

Software support7/10

CUDA is supported, and the card has 6144 CUDA cores. Gigabyte's NVIDIA driver download is listed for Windows 10 and 11 only. If you plan to run Linux, check the driver situation yourself before buying, since the manufacturer page does not list it. The card also has illumination and a black finish. That matters little for a headless or server build, but it will show in a windowed case.

Build and warranty8/10

Owners praise the build quality. Gigabyte lists a four-year warranty, which requires online registration. Registration is a small step that is easy to forget, so do it when you install the card. Dual BIOS gives you a choice between Performance and Silent modes.

Who it suits

This card suits a gaming PC at 1440p in a case with plenty of length. A 12GB limit, a 750 W power supply requirement and a 327 mm body are the trade-offs. The long warranty and owner reports of cool running count in its favour. Buyers who need more video memory for AI, or a compact card for a small server, should look at other options.
