New to graphics cards? What they are and what to look for

A graphics card (GPU) draws the picture for games and speeds up video editing and AI tools. It fits inside a desktop PC.

Do you need a graphics card? Needed for modern PC gaming and running AI models at home. Not needed for office work, browsing or video streaming.

What to look for

  • Enough video memory: 12GB or more for new games and AI
  • That it physically fits your case and power supply
  • Noise and power use

The full review

Where it fits

The AORUS GeForce RTX 3070 MASTER 8G is a factory-overclocked RTX 3070 with a large three-fan cooler. It has 5888 CUDA cores and a 1845 MHz core clock, against a 1725 MHz reference figure. Memory is 8 GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus at 14000 MHz, which gives 448 GB/s of bandwidth. The card connects over PCI Express x16 4.0.

It is a full-height, full-length card with multicolour lighting and a black finish. It suits a full-size desktop or workstation where CUDA support matters and there is space for a big cooler.

Video memory3/10

The 8 GB capacity is the main limit. The 256-bit bus and 448 GB/s bandwidth are solid figures for the memory it has, but capacity sets the ceiling. With 8 GB, it suits smaller workloads better than large local AI models, where memory size decides what you can load. If you want headroom for bigger models or heavier projects, the capacity is the number to weigh first.

Cooling and noise5/10

Gigabyte fits three 100 mm fans, a large copper plate, heat pipes and a metal back plate. Owner feedback on how well this works is mixed. Owners praise the cooling, saying the fans are quiet and the card runs cool. Others disagree: one owner says it runs too hot and needed an undervolt, and another says it runs warmer than other aftermarket cards, blaming the thermal pads.

That split matters if you plan a quiet build. The cooler hardware looks substantial on paper, but the thermal pad complaints suggest checking temperatures after install. The 220 W TDP is a third-party figure, as Gigabyte doesn't publish a board power.

Owners also single out the side LCD screen for praise.

Size and power4/10

The card measures 290 mm long, 131 mm wide and 60 mm high. It uses two 8-pin power connectors, and the spec sheet gives a 650 W minimum system power supply. With that length and those connectors, it fits full-size cases with a suitable PSU better than compact builds or servers. Measure your case clearance before ordering.

For display outputs there are three DisplayPort 1.4a ports, two HDMI 2.1 ports and one HDMI 2.0 port. It supports up to four displays and a maximum digital resolution of 7680x4320.

Software6/10

CUDA is supported, which matters for NVIDIA-based compute and AI tools. Owners are less happy with the vendor's own software, which they call bad. If you plan to rely on Gigabyte's utilities for lighting or tuning, that feedback is worth weighing.

Warranty7/10

Gigabyte offers a 4-year warranty, with online registration required. Register the card promptly to keep that cover. For a card with mixed thermal feedback from owners, a long warranty is a useful backstop.

Verdict

This is a well-equipped RTX 3070 with a large cooler, a factory overclock and a long warranty. Its weaknesses are plain from the specs and owner reports: 8 GB of memory, a long body with two 8-pin connectors, and some reports of heat and weak vendor software. It fits a roomy desktop where CUDA and a solid warranty matter more than memory capacity.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the cooling, saying the fans are quiet and the card runs cool.
  • Some owners report heat problems, with one needing an undervolt and another blaming the thermal pads.
  • Owners describe the Gigabyte software as bad.
  • The side LCD screen gets praise from owners.
Who should skip it
  • Anyone planning to run large local AI models that need more than 8 GB of memory.
  • Builders with a small case or server chassis that can't take a 290 mm card.
  • Buyers who want a guaranteed cool, quiet card and are put off by reports of heat.
