New to headsets? What they are and what to look for

A headset is headphones with a microphone, for calls, gaming and shutting out noise.

Do you need a headset? Worth it if you're on calls a lot, game online, or work somewhere noisy.

What to look for

  • A clear microphone (a boom mic is clearest)
  • Comfort for hours of wear
  • Noise cancelling if you work somewhere noisy, and long battery life if wireless

The full review

Where it fits

The Cloud II is a wired gaming headset. It uses a closed-back, circumaural design with 53mm dynamic drivers, and its listed recommended usage is gaming. It lists compatibility with PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and mobile. HyperX backs it with a 2-year warranty.

The box holds the headset, a USB audio control box, a detachable mic, velour ear cushions and a quick start guide.

Sound6/10

The drivers are neodymium-magnet dynamic units with a frequency response of 10Hz to 23kHz. Sensitivity is 98dBSPL/mW, impedance is 60Ω and total harmonic distortion is listed at 2%. The spec sheet also lists virtual 7.1 surround sound.

Owner feedback describes the sound as clear, with limited bass. Clear sound with light bass suggests it suits game audio and voice chat more than bass-heavy music. If low-end weight matters to you, that is the main thing to weigh up.

Microphone5/10

The mic is detachable. It is an electret condenser with a unidirectional pickup pattern and noise-cancelling design. HyperX lists the sensitivity as -42dBV, the output as -39±3dB, the boom length as 150mm and the capsule as 6mm.

A detachable boom is useful if you want to wear the headset for listening only. The spec lists a noise-cancelling boom, but owner feedback on the mic is mixed, with some complaints. If clear voice on calls is your priority, treat the mic as adequate rather than a standout.

Comfort and build8/10

The headset weighs 320g, or 330g with the mic attached. It ships with velour ear cushions. Owners praise the comfort, and they also praise the build and durability.

The head-band wearing style and circumaural cups mean the cushions sit around the ear rather than on it. The comfort case rests on the owner reports, the velour cushions and the listed weight.

Connections and platforms

There is no wireless option and no battery, so there is nothing to charge. The headset connects through a 1m 3.5mm cable with a 4-pole CTIA plug.

A USB audio control box adds a second route. It is USB 2.0, supports 16-bit audio at up to 48kHz, and connects with a 2m USB mixer cable. That makes it usable on a PC through USB, as well as on devices that take a 3.5mm headset plug.

The lack of any Bluetooth or dongle option is the biggest limit here. You are tied to a cable, and the 1m headset cable is short if you sit far from your device without the USB extension.

Noise handling and value6/10

This is not an active noise-cancelling headset. The noise cancelling is in the microphone. The headset has a closed acoustic system and circumaural cups.

Value comes mainly from the things owners and the spec sheet agree on. The build is described as durable, comfort is praised, the platform support is broad and the warranty runs two years. You give up wireless and ANC to get that, and the bass is described as limited.

Who it suits

The Cloud II suits someone who games on one or more platforms and wants a comfortable wired headset with a detachable mic. It makes sense if you want one headset for a PC and a console, since both 3.5mm and USB connections are listed. It is a poor match if you want a wireless headset, active noise cancelling or a bass-forward sound.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners repeatedly praise how comfortable the headset is.
  • Build quality and durability get consistent praise.
  • Sound is described as clear, though bass is limited.
  • Opinions on the microphone are mixed, with some complaints.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want a wireless or Bluetooth headset with a battery.
  • Anyone who wants active noise cancelling for travel or noisy rooms.
  • Listeners who want strong, bass-heavy sound.
