TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI
6.3out of 10verdict: good, not the best

This is an ATX AM5 board for builders who want a B650 platform with PCIe 5.0 NVMe, three M.2 slots and 2.5GbE. It suits Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 builds that need a good spread of rear ports and a front USB-C header.

New to motherboards? What they are and what to look for

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a desktop PC. Every other part plugs into it: the processor, memory, graphics card, SSDs and the cables to the case.

Do you need a motherboard? Only if you're building or upgrading a desktop. Choose it after the processor, because the two must use the same socket.

What to look for

  • The socket that matches your processor (AM5, AM4, LGA1851 or LGA1700)
  • The size your case takes: ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX
  • Enough M.2 slots, USB ports and built-in Wi-Fi or 2.5GbE if you want them

Support and features

Software updatesNo end-of-support date found in the sources; needs a check on the ASUS support site.

Compatibility

LinuxPartly works on Linux. Mainline kernel 6.3 added sensor support, but owner reports are mixed: onboard sound failed, Wi-Fi was unrecognized until a newer kernel or BIOS update, and one user said kernel 6.5 did not detect the sensors. source

The full review

Where it fits

The TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI is an ATX board for socket AM5 on the AMD B650 chipset. It supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors. It has four DDR5 DIMM slots, with speeds listed from 4800 to 7600+ (OC), EXPO support, and both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered memory. ASUS's spec page gives a 256GB maximum, while its user manual gives 128GB, so check that figure before planning a very large memory build.

Storage and expansion

There are three M.2 Key M slots. With Ryzen 9000 or 7000, M.2_1 runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 and M.2_2 at PCIe 4.0 x4. M.2_3 is PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset and shares bandwidth with the second x16-sized slot. M.2_2 also accepts 22110 drives. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports bring the total to seven drives, and RAID 0, 1 and 10 are listed.

The graphics slot is PCIe 4.0 on the spec page, so PCIe 5.0 on this board is an M.2 feature. With Ryzen 9000 or 7000 it is a single PCIe 4.0/3.0 x16 slot. With Ryzen 8000 it is a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot running at x8/x4. The chipset adds one more x16-sized slot in x4 mode and two PCIe x1 slots. A build with a graphics card, a capture card and several NVMe drives will run into that shared bandwidth, so plan the slots first.

Connectivity7/10

The rear panel has eight USB ports. One is a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C, three are USB 3.2 Gen 2 (including one Type-C) and four are USB 2.0 Type-A. There is no rear USB4. With half the rear ports at USB 2.0 speed, this board suits keyboards, mice and dongles better than a pile of fast external drives. At the front there is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C header, plus USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 headers.

Networking is a Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet port with TUF LANGuard. Wireless is 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with Bluetooth 5.2, and there is no Wi-Fi 7. The rear panel also has one HDMI and one DisplayPort output. Owners praise the rear I/O.

Power delivery6/10

ASUS's US page describes the power stages as 12(60A)+2(60A)+2. Mezha lists 12+2 DrMOS rated at 60A, and the Amazon UK title says 14 power stages. Guru3d says the power phase design is sufficient to pair with a Ryzen 7 7950X.

Mezha reports the CPU reached about 92°C under load in its tests. Guru3d measured a whole-PC draw of roughly 70 to 80W at idle and 225 to 250W under full CPU stress, using a Ryzen 7000 processor and a graphics card. That is a system figure, not a board-only one. Together these point to a board that suits mainstream and high-end Ryzen chips, with CPU cooling mattering as much as the VRM.

BIOS and software5/10

Guru3d's reviewer says RGB and BIOS configuration are a bothersome factor. The board has an RGB LED pin header and four chassis fan connectors.

Value and who it suits7/10

Owners describe it as affordable and priced just right. They also like its aesthetics and rear I/O. The trade-offs are clear from the specifications: Wi-Fi 6 rather than Wi-Fi 7, no rear USB4, a PCIe 4.0 graphics slot and four USB 2.0 rear ports. With a PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot, three M.2 slots and a rear USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C, it suits a Ryzen build that puts storage and everyday connectivity ahead of the newest wireless standard.
