New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for
The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.
Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.
What to look for
- Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
- 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
- A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review
Where it fits
The RM1000x SHIFT (2025) is a 1000W, fully modular ATX supply. It is ATX 3.1 certified and PCIe 5.1 compliant, and it ships with one native 12V-2x6 cable. That makes it a fit for a build with a recent NVIDIA graphics card that needs that connector without an adapter.
The +12V rail is rated at 83.3A, which equals the full 1000W. All the output is available on the main rail, so a high-draw GPU and CPU share one pool. The 1000W figure is both the +12V rating and the combined total.
The side-mounted connectors8/10
The SHIFT design uses side-mounted modular connectors. Reviewers and owners praise this layout for easier cable routing. The connectors need 30mm of clearance between the PSU and the side panel. Check your case's depth behind the motherboard tray before you buy. In a tight case, that clearance is the main practical constraint.
Because the unit is fully modular, you connect only the cables your build needs. That helps keep a case tidy and airflow clear.
Noise8/10
The fan is a 140mm fluid dynamic bearing model, the NR140HP, with a Zero RPM mode. Quiet running and the zero-fan mode are praised across reviewers.
The Cybenetics noise figures back that up. The unit rates A at 115V with 20.11 dB[A] and A+ at 230V with 19.55 dB[A]. The 230V figure is the lower of the two. For a desktop on a desk or in a living room, those numbers suit a build where fan noise matters.
Efficiency7/10
The unit carries a Cybenetics Gold rating. Tech2Geek reports efficiency above 90% from early load levels. That helps when the PC runs well below 1000W, since the figure holds from early in the load range.
Build quality and protections7/10
KitGuru reports minor-rail ripple around 10mV at full load and calls it excellent. Low ripple points to clean power for sensitive components. Because the figure is taken at full load, it describes the unit under its heaviest demand.
KitGuru lists the protections as OVP, OCP, SCP, OPP and OTP. LTT Labs lists UVP, under-voltage protection, as absent, and owners have complained about this. It is a gap in an otherwise full protection set. If you want every standard protection on the label, it is worth knowing before you buy.
What owners and reviewers say
Three themes recur across reviewers. They praise the quiet running and the zero-fan mode, and they praise the side-mounted layout for easier routing. The one complaint is the missing UVP, which matches the LTT Labs listing. The first two themes tie directly to the fan and the connector layout described above.
Warranty10/10
Corsair backs the unit with a 10-year warranty. The unit is also ATX 3.1 certified and PCIe 5.1 compliant, so the long cover comes with current standards. That suits a unit you plan to move into a future system.
Who it suits
This is a good match for a gaming or creative build with a high-draw GPU, where noise, tidy cabling and a native 12V-2x6 cable all count. The 10-year warranty adds to the case for keeping it across upgrades.
It suits a builder less well if the case is cramped behind the motherboard tray, because of the 30mm side clearance. It also suits less well anyone who treats under-voltage protection as a must, given the LTT Labs listing. For a server or always-on box with modest load, 1000W is more capacity than the job needs, although the early-load efficiency figure helps there.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Reviewers praise the quiet running and the Zero RPM fan mode.
- The side-mounted cable layout is praised for making routing easier.
- Some reviewers complain that under-voltage protection is missing.
Who should skip it
- Builders whose case has less than 30mm between the PSU and side panel.
- Buyers who want under-voltage protection on the spec sheet.
- Anyone with a low-power or always-on system that doesn't need 1000W.
