New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for
The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.
Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.
What to look for
- Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
- 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
- A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

Where it fits
The TUF Gaming 1000W Gold is a 1000W ATX unit with 80 PLUS Gold certification and a listed efficiency of 92%. It has active PFC and takes 100 to 240V AC input. Its listed purpose is PC use. The model identifier is TUF-GAMING-1000G. The White Edition (TUF-GAMING-1000G-WHITE) and EVO (TUF-GAMING-1000G-EVO) are separate models that differ in some specs, so check you are reading the right one.
Power delivery and protections7/10
The whole 1000W is available on the 12V rail, rated at up to 83.3A. The 3.3V and 5V rails each give up to 25A, with a combined limit of 130W. The 5Vsb rail gives 3A and the -12V rail 0.8A.
Protection covers over power, over voltage, under voltage, short circuit, over current and over temperature. The build uses low-ESR Japanese capacitors and dual-ball bearings. The quality case rests on those component choices, the protection list and owner feedback. Owners praise reliability.
Cabling and connectors8/10
The cabling is fully modular, which helps in a case where cable clutter matters. The headline item is a PCI-E Gen 5.1 16-pin cable in the box, so a card that uses that connector needs no adapter. There are also four PCIe 8-pin connectors for cards that use them or for a multi-GPU setup.
SATA gets five connectors and peripheral (Molex) gets four, which covers a build with several drives. The motherboard cable is 61cm, the CPU cable is 65cm and the PCIe cable is 67.5cm. Those lengths suit a standard mid-tower. A large full-tower with a bottom-mounted PSU may be a tighter fit. The unit measures 150 x 150 x 86mm and weighs 2.48kg.
Owners praise the modular cabling.
Noise and cooling6/10
Cooling comes from a single 13.5cm fan. The 0dB mode is on by default, and the fan spins up only at a certain load. Owners praise quiet operation. Some owners also report the fan ramping at light or gaming loads, so the silent range may not cover every build. A build that sits near that threshold during normal use may hear the fan more often than one that stays well below it.
A few owners report minor fan bearing noise after six to eight months. It is described as minor, but it is worth knowing if you build for silence.
The unit has no lighting, and it comes in black.
Efficiency6/10
The unit carries 80 PLUS Gold certification and a listed efficiency of 92%. With 1000W of capacity, it makes more sense for a system that really draws high power than for a low-power server.
Warranty10/10
ASUS gives a 10-year warranty. That matters for a unit that may outlast several motherboards and graphics cards. It also reduces the risk from the minor bearing-noise reports.
Who it suits
It suits a PC build with a graphics card that uses the 16-pin connector, where the native cable and 83.3A 12V rail do useful work. The fully modular cabling, the full protection set and the 10-year warranty back that up. The fan behaviour is the main caveat. Check how your build's load sits against the 0dB threshold before you buy if silence is a priority.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Some owners report the fan ramping up under light or gaming loads.
- Many owners praise how quiet it runs.
- Owners praise the modular cabling and reliability.
- A few owners mention minor fan bearing noise after six to eight months.
Who should skip it
- Buyers building a low-power, always-on machine that will rarely draw much power
- Anyone who needs a fan that stays silent under every gaming load
- Builders who want Platinum or Titanium efficiency
