New to NVMe SSDs? What they are and what to look for
An NVMe SSD is a stick-shaped drive that plugs straight into a computer's motherboard. It's the fastest common kind of storage and makes a computer start and load programs quickly.
Do you need an NVMe SSD? Useful if you're building or upgrading a PC, adding space to a PlayStation 5, or replacing a slow hard drive. Check your computer has a free M.2 slot first.
What to look for
- Capacity: 1TB is a sensible minimum, 2TB for games
- PCIe 4.0 is plenty for almost everyone; 5.0 only helps in a few tasks
- Endurance (TBW) and warranty length, which show how long it's built to last

The full review
Where it fits
The Samsung SSD 990 EVO Plus 2TB is an M.2 2280 NVMe drive released on 25 September 2024. It uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2 interface and supports NVMe 2.0. Samsung rates sequential reads at up to 7,250 MB/s and sequential writes at up to 6,300 MB/s.
The 2TB capacity gives room for an OS, a project library or a set of container images and VM disks on one device.
Performance7/10
Samsung specifies random read of up to 1,000K IOPS and random write of up to 1,350K IOPS at QD32 for the 2TB model. Samsung ran those tests with IOmeter 1.1.0 on a Ryzen 9 7950X system, and the figures are not guaranteed. Treat them as a ceiling under favourable conditions.
Reviewers point to two limits. The first is the DRAM-less design, which uses HMB only. That gives the drive a slight disadvantage in sustained random I/O against DRAM-equipped rivals. The second comes from one source only: write speed drops on very large sustained transfers once the SLC cache is exhausted.
Because of those reports, the drive suits bursty workloads, such as installing software, loading projects and moderate file copies, better than long, continuous bulk writes. If you regularly push very large transfers in one go, expect the rated write speed not to hold for the whole job.
Heat and power
Owners and reviewers describe the drive as cool and efficient. Reported peak temperatures sit in the 49°C to 73°C range under load. That is a useful result for a drive rated at this speed.
The drive ships without a heatsink. Samsung recommends placing the 990 EVO Plus under a motherboard heatsink to avoid throttling. If your board has an M.2 heatsink, that covers the advice. If it doesn't, you will need to budget for a separate one, and that is the main extra cost to plan for.
Endurance and warrantyEndurance 8/10Warranty 9/10
The 2TB model carries a 1,200 TBW endurance rating. The warranty runs for five years or until the rated total bytes written is reached, whichever comes first. Both limits count, so a write-heavy workload could end cover before the five years are up.
For typical desktop, development and homelab use, the TBW figure is a sensible one to check against your own write volume. Logging-heavy servers, build farms and busy databases are the cases where it deserves a closer look.
Software9/10
Reviewers describe Samsung Magician as a strength, providing firmware updates and drive-health information. For a sysadmin or homelabber, that means a vendor tool for keeping firmware current and checking drive condition without reaching for third-party utilities.
Who it suits
The drive suits someone building or upgrading a PC, workstation or lab machine who wants 2TB on a single M.2 2280 stick. It fits best where a motherboard heatsink is already in place and workloads are mixed rather than constantly writing huge files.
It is less suited to anyone who needs top sustained random I/O, since the DRAM-less design trails DRAM-equipped rivals there, or to buyers who expect a heatsink in the box.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners and reviewers report that the drive runs cool and efficiently, with peak temperatures between 49°C and 73°C under load.
- Samsung Magician is praised for firmware updates and drive-health information.
- The drive ships without a heatsink, which some reviewers point out.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need the best sustained random I/O and want a DRAM-equipped drive.
- Anyone who wants a heatsink included and has no motherboard heatsink for the drive.
- Users who regularly run very large continuous write jobs.
