New to webcams? What they are and what to look for

A webcam is a small camera that sits on your monitor for video calls and streaming.

Do you need a webcam? Worth it if your laptop's built-in camera looks grainy, or you use a desktop PC without one.

What to look for

  • 1080p is enough for calls; good low-light performance matters more than 4K
  • Autofocus and a built-in privacy shutter
  • Works without extra software on your computer

Compatibility

LinuxPartly works on Linux. Works through the standard UVC driver in the mainline kernel, but Insta360's Link Controller software is Windows/macOS only, so advanced controls need unofficial reverse-engineered tools. source

The full review

Where it fits

The Link 2 is Insta360's webcam with a 2-axis gimbal. Insta360 also sells the Link 2C, which has no gimbal. The Link 2 lists AI gimbal tracking and a Privacy Mode that turns the camera to face down. That makes this model a fit for people who move about during calls, or who present from a desk and want the camera to follow them. It also suits anyone who wants to skip a separate microphone.

Picture quality7/10

Landscape video runs at 4K in 30, 25 or 24fps. Drop to 1080p or 720p and the frame rate goes up to 60fps. Portrait mode is available at 4K, 1080p and 720p. The camera offers H.264 and MJPEG codecs. The field of view is fixed at 79.5° diagonal and 67° horizontal, with digital zoom up to 4x.

Owners and reviewers describe the image as sharp, with accurate colour in good light. That praise is the basis for rating the picture well when the room is bright. The lens is f/1.8 with a 26 mm equivalent focal length. Autofocus covers 10 cm to infinity, so close-up objects on a desk are in range as well as your face.

Low light4/10

This is where owner feedback turns. Several owners report noise or grain when a room is dim. Insta360's later Link 2 Pro and Link 2C Pro use a 1/1.3-inch sensor. Owners also report that tracking can be lost in extreme low light. If your room is lit by a single desk lamp, plan to add light.

Microphone7/10

Insta360 lists AI Noise-Canceling with three profiles: Voice Focus, Voice Suppression and Music Balance. It doesn't give the number of microphones. Owners praise the built-in microphone and the noise cancelling. On that basis it suits calls without a headset or separate mic.

Features and privacy7/10

The Link 2 offers AI gimbal tracking. Owner complaints centre on tracking and gesture reliability. They include losing tracking when a face is covered, as well as the low-light failures noted above. If you rely on hands-free framing for a talk, that matters.

Privacy Mode turns the camera to face down and mutes it. The manufacturer doesn't confirm a physical shutter, and reviews conflict on the point. So treat the face-down position as the privacy feature, and don't assume a lens cover exists. If you need a guaranteed physical block over the lens, check with Insta360 before buying.

Connection and compatibility6/10

The camera connects by USB-C, using USB 2.0, with a cable of about 60 inches. A USB-C to USB-A adapter is supported for older ports. Insta360 lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later. Some features need macOS 13. Windows ARM is not supported, so owners of ARM-based Windows laptops should look elsewhere. The power rating is 5V/1A, which is an input rating and not a measured draw.

Verdict

With 4K video, 1080p at 60fps and owner praise for sharpness and the microphone, the Link 2 suits a desk webcam role in a bright room. The gimbal model adds AI tracking and a face-down Privacy Mode, but owner reports of grain in dim light and unreliable tracking limit how far you can trust those extras. Pair it with decent lighting and it makes sense. In a dark home office, those complaints weigh more.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise sharp image quality and accurate colour when lighting is good.
  • The built-in microphone and AI noise cancelling get positive comments.
  • Several owners report noise or grain in dim light.
  • Tracking and gesture control reliability draws complaints, including loss of tracking in extreme low light and when a face is covered.
Who should skip it
  • Anyone who needs a confirmed physical lens shutter for privacy
  • Users who work mostly in dim rooms without extra lighting
  • Owners of Windows ARM laptops, which Insta360 doesn't support
