New to PC cases? What they are and what to look for

The case is the box that holds a desktop PC's parts, keeps them cool with fans and airflow, and sets how big and loud the finished PC is.

Do you need a PC case? Every desktop build needs one. It's also the part people see, so looks matter more here than anywhere else.

What to look for

  • Room for your graphics card's length and your CPU cooler's height
  • A mesh front panel and included fans for cooler, quieter running
  • The motherboard size it takes, and whether it fits on or under your desk

The full review

Where it fits

The XT Pro Ultra is a mid-tower from Phanteks. The manufacturer describes an ultra-fine mesh front and a top dust filter. The case measures 450 x 230 x 500 mm (D x W x H) and weighs 7.55 kg.

It takes E-ATX boards up to 280 mm wide, plus ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX. It also supports rear-connect boards for MSI Project Zero, ASUS BTF and Gigabyte Project Stealth. Anyone planning a build around one of those board lines has that covered. Phanteks gives a 5-year limited warranty.

Airflow and cooling7/10

Four M25-140 D-RGB fans come in the box. The mounting options are broad. The front takes three 120 mm or three 140 mm fans. The top takes three 120 mm or two 140 mm. A midplate position takes three 120 mm fans, and the rear takes one 120 mm or 140 mm fan.

Radiator support is also wide: up to 360 mm at the top, 240 mm at the front and 120 mm at the rear. With a mesh front, four fans fitted and room for a 360 mm top radiator, the case gives a buyer several ways to build a cooling setup.

Reviewer figures are moderate. In one load test under Prime95 and FurMark, the CPU reached about 73.6 °C and the GPU about 71.6 °C. Idle CPU temperature was about 43.6 °C. A second reviewer measured VRM temperatures around 43 °C in a 10-minute Cinebench run, with the case fans averaging under 900 RPM.

Noise4/10

Owners complain about the stock fan noise. The RPM figure from the second reviewer is a point in the other direction, but it comes from a single 10-minute run. Buyers who care about noise should weigh the owner complaint against that one figure.

Space and compatibility8/10

The case takes graphics cards up to 415 mm long and 184 mm wide. CPU cooler height is limited to 184 mm. The bottom-mounted PSU can be up to 270 mm long.

With 415 mm of GPU clearance and 184 mm of cooler height, it suits a large graphics card paired with a tall air cooler. The 360 mm top radiator gives a liquid-cooling option as well.

Storage is more modest. Phanteks lists two drive configurations: five 2.5-inch drives plus one 3.5-inch HDD, or three 2.5-inch SSDs plus two 3.5-inch drives. That suits an SSD-based build better than one with many hard drives.

Build and cable routing6/10

Owners praise the cable routing. That matters in a case that supports E-ATX boards and several fan positions, where there is a lot to connect.

The recurring complaint on construction is side panel flex. Owners raise it as a drawback. Buyers who value a rigid panel should keep it in mind.

Value8/10

Owners praise value for money. The specification backs that up. Four D-RGB fans are included, and the case offers wide radiator support, E-ATX compatibility and rear-connect board support. The trade-off is the stock fan noise that owners mention.

Who it suits

The XT Pro Ultra suits a builder who wants a large graphics card, a tall cooler or a 360 mm radiator in one mid-tower, with fans already fitted. It is a weaker fit for a quiet-first build or a storage-heavy machine, given the noise complaints and the two-bay 3.5-inch limit.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the case as good value for money.
  • Owners like the cable routing space.
  • Some owners find the stock fans noisy.
  • Some owners report the side panel flexes.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who put quiet running first and don't want to deal with stock fan noise.
  • Anyone building a storage-heavy system with several 3.5-inch hard drives.
  • Buyers who want a rigid side panel.
