New to power supplies? What they are and what to look for

The power supply (PSU) turns mains electricity into the power every part of a desktop PC runs on. A good one is quiet, efficient and protects the rest of the PC if something goes wrong.

Do you need a power supply? Every desktop build needs one. Pre-built PCs already have one, but upgrading to a bigger graphics card can mean a bigger power supply.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for your graphics card and processor, with some to spare: our PC build planner works it out
  • 80 Plus Gold or better for lower running costs
  • A long warranty: 7 to 10 years signals a well-made unit

The full review

Where it fits

The MAG A750GL PCIE5 is a 750W ATX power supply from MSI. It measures 140 × 150 × 86 mm and is fully modular. The rating and the single native 16-pin cable point to a mid-range build with one graphics card. That could be a gaming PC, a developer workstation or a general-purpose desktop.

Power and protections6/10

MSI lists a peak power excursion of 1500W for 100µs, which is up to 200% of the rated output. Owners praise the unit as stable and reliable, and they single out its protections. An independent UK review reports an over-power shutdown at about 780W, which is 30W above the rating. That shows the protection trips just beyond the rated load.

The ATX standard is stated inconsistently. The UK store bullets say ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1, while its description says ATX 3.0. The user manual says ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0. If the exact revision matters for your build, check it before you buy.

One owner says 750W is tight for an RTX 4090 build. That is a single mention, but it fits the rating. A card in that class would leave little headroom on a 750W unit, so this supply suits more modest graphics cards better.

Efficiency7/10

The unit is 80 PLUS Gold, with efficiency up to 90%. MSI's product page also shows a Cybenetics Gold icon. Owners describe the efficiency as good.

Noise5/10

The fan is a 120mm fluid dynamic bearing design running at 500–1800 RPM. Owners generally praise the unit as quiet. Idle behaviour is the weak spot. One owner and one reviewer report low-frequency whine and ticking from the fan at idle. One owner found it unsuitable for a silent build.

Reports on zero-RPM mode conflict. One UK review says the fan stays off below about 200W. A later review says MSI lists no zero-RPM mode, and MSI's product page does not mention one. With that disagreement, and the idle complaints, a buyer who wants a fan that never spins at low load should not count on it.

Cables and connectors7/10

Full modularity lets you fit only the leads you need, which suits smaller cases and tidy builds. The connector set is:

  • One native 16-pin PCIe 5.x cable rated at 450W, in the 12V-2x6 style
  • Three PCIe 6+2-pin
  • Eight SATA
  • Four Molex
  • One floppy drive connector
  • Two EPS 4+4

The native 16-pin cable is rated at 450W and follows the 12V-2x6 style. Three PCIe 6+2-pin connectors cover a card that uses the older plugs. Eight SATA connectors leave room for several drives, which suits a homelab or workstation with a handful of SSDs and disks. Two EPS 4+4 leads are present too.

Warranty7/10

The MSI UK store lists a seven-year warranty. That gives UK buyers a clear support period for a part that sits in a system for years.

Bottom line

The appeal is the combination of Gold efficiency, full modularity, a native 16-pin cable and a seven-year warranty, backed by owner reports of stable, reliable running. The limits are the 750W rating for top-end graphics cards and the idle fan whine some owners report. A mainstream single-GPU build suits it. A silent build or a flagship-GPU build needs a different choice.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise it as quiet, stable and reliable, with good efficiency and protections.
  • One owner and one reviewer report low-frequency whine and ticking from the fan at idle, with no zero-RPM mode.
  • One owner found 750W tight for an RTX 4090 build.
Who should skip it
  • Anyone building a silent PC who needs the fan fully off at idle
  • Buyers planning an RTX 4090 or similarly power-hungry graphics card
  • Buyers who need a confirmed ATX 3.1 certification
