New to PC cases? What they are and what to look for

The case is the box that holds a desktop PC's parts, keeps them cool with fans and airflow, and sets how big and loud the finished PC is.

Do you need a PC case? Every desktop build needs one. It's also the part people see, so looks matter more here than anywhere else.

What to look for

  • Room for your graphics card's length and your CPU cooler's height
  • A mesh front panel and included fans for cooler, quieter running
  • The motherboard size it takes, and whether it fits on or under your desk

The full review

Where it fits

The Montech XR Wood is an ATX mid-tower. It takes ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX motherboards. The front panel is metal mesh, and four 120mm GF120 ARGB PWM fans come pre-installed. The case accommodates up to 12 fans in total.

Owner feedback centres on two things: praise for the radiator and fan support, and praise for the low price. Those themes point to a case aimed at people who want cooling headroom without spending much. It is not pitched at quiet, sealed builds, given the mesh front.

Airflow and cooling7/10

The mesh front and the four included fans give the case a sound starting point for airflow. You do not need to buy extra fans to get air moving through it. The fans are ARGB models, so they add lighting as well.

For liquid cooling, Tom's Hardware lists a 280mm radiator at the front and a 360mm radiator at the top. Other sources give different figures, so confirm the fit of a specific radiator before you order one. With room for up to 12 fans, the case suits builders who plan to add to the fan layout later.

The front dust filter is the main airflow complaint from owners. They say it restricts airflow and adds noise. Removing the dust filters drops GPU temperature by a couple of degrees. That is a small gain, but it shows the filters have a cost.

Space and compatibility7/10

The case lists a 420mm maximum graphics card length and a 175mm maximum CPU cooler height. Check your own graphics card and cooler against those two figures before you buy.

A front radiator changes the graphics card picture. Vividrepairs estimates GPU clearance with a front 360mm radiator at around 320-330mm. That is the reviewer's estimate, not a measurement. If you want a long card and a thick front radiator together, work out the fit first.

Power supply length needs a check too. The listed maximum for an ATX unit is 230mm, but Vividrepairs gives 200mm. If you are buying a longer power supply, assume the lower figure until you have confirmed otherwise.

Storage is limited. The case offers two 3.5-inch and two 2.5-inch drive spots. With four drive mounts in total, it suits a gaming build with a few SSDs or a hard drive more than a build that needs many disks.

Building and noiseBuild and ease of building 5/10Noise 5/10

Owner feedback on the building process is thin. The one build-related complaint is that the case has no back-connect motherboard support. That comes from a single source. It matters only if you plan to use a back-connect motherboard.

On noise, the fitted fans are PWM models. The main noise complaint from owners is the front dust filter, which they say adds noise on top of restricting airflow. A mesh-fronted case with four fans is built for airflow first, so it is not the natural pick for a near-silent build.

Who it suits

This is a case for budget-minded builders who care about cooling. The four included fans, the radiator support and the low price are what owners praise. The limits are clear from the specifications: four drive mounts, a front dust filter that owners say hurts airflow, and no back-connect support according to one source.

If your plan is a gaming PC with a large graphics card, one or two SSDs and either air cooling or a top-mounted radiator, the specifications fit that plan well. If you need lots of storage, a back-connect motherboard or a quiet, closed-up build, look at other cases.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the radiator and fan support.
  • Owners like the low price.
  • Owners say the front dust filter restricts airflow and adds noise.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers with a back-connect motherboard
  • Builders who need many 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drive bays
  • Anyone wanting a near-silent build with a solid front panel
