New to motherboards? What they are and what to look for

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a desktop PC. Every other part plugs into it: the processor, memory, graphics card, SSDs and the cables to the case.

Do you need a motherboard? Only if you're building or upgrading a desktop. Choose it after the processor, because the two must use the same socket.

What to look for

  • The socket that matches your processor (AM5, AM4, LGA1851 or LGA1700)
  • The size your case takes: ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX
  • Enough M.2 slots, USB ports and built-in Wi-Fi or 2.5GbE if you want them

The full review

Where it fits

The TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI is an ATX board on the AMD B850 chipset. It uses socket AM5 and supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series CPUs. It suits a mainstream Ryzen desktop that needs PCIe 5.0 graphics, three M.2 slots and Wi-Fi 7 on one board.

Platform and storage7/10

Memory comes through four DDR5 DIMM slots. ASUS lists a 256GB maximum, speeds up to 8000+ MT/s when overclocked, and support for ECC and non-ECC unbuffered modules.

There are three M.2 slots. M.2_1 is a 2280 PCIe 5.0 x4 slot with Ryzen 9000 and 7000 CPUs. M.2_2 is PCIe 4.0 x4. M.2_3 is also 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4, but it shares bandwidth with the second x16 slot. With only one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, the board suits one very fast system drive plus Gen4 storage for everything else. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports cover older drives.

For expansion, the main slot is a PCIe 5.0 x16 for graphics. The second x16-size slot is PCIe 4.0, listed as x8/x4 on 8000 series CPUs and x4 on the chipset. Two PCIe 4.0 x1 slots sit alongside. If you plan to fill M.2_3 and use the second x16 slot, check that shared bandwidth first.

Connectivity8/10

The rear panel has ten USB ports: one 20Gbps Type-C, three 10Gbps Type-A, four 5Gbps Type-A and two USB 2.0. The 20Gbps Type-C port gives fast external storage a proper home without an add-in card. Front-panel options are one 10Gbps Type-C, one 5Gbps header and two USB 2.0 headers. That front USB-C connection is useful for modern cases.

Networking is a Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet port plus Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, 2x2) with Bluetooth 5.4. USB4 is only available through an internal Thunderbolt header, not as a rear port, so buyers who want USB4 on the rear panel should look elsewhere.

Power delivery8/10

The VRM uses 14+2+1 DrMOS stages, each rated 80A, on an 8-layer PCB. Power comes in through 8+8 pin CPU connectors. TechTweaktown says the board is more than enough for a Ryzen 9 9950X with PBO enabled. The same review says it is probably not the choice for very heavy overclocking. With that many 80A stages and two 8-pin connectors, the board looks well matched to high-end Ryzen chips at stock or with PBO. Extreme overclockers may want something built for that job.

BIOS and owner reports6/10

The board has a 256 Mb flash chip running an AMI UEFI BIOS. It includes a BIOS FlashBack button, EZ Flash 3 and CrashFree BIOS 3.

Owner feedback on stability is mixed in detail but positive in numbers. Amazon UK shows 4.5 from 435 reviews, and Micro Center shows 4.45 from 93 reviews. Those are ratings only. The reported problems centre on memory and booting. One ROG forum user needed a single stick in slot A2 and a CMOS clear to get going. A Micro Center reviewer had a lit DRAM light that a replacement board fixed. These are two individual reports.

Verdict

The feature list is the strength here: Wi-Fi 7, 2.5GbE, a 20Gbps rear USB-C port, a front USB-C header and a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot. The VRM is sized for top Ryzen chips, and the BIOS includes FlashBack, EZ Flash 3 and CrashFree BIOS 3. The limits are clear too. Only one M.2 slot is PCIe 5.0, M.2_3 shares bandwidth with the second x16 slot, and USB4 needs an internal Thunderbolt header. Memory and boot problems appear in two owner reports. For a Ryzen 9000 build that does not rely on heavy overclocking, it covers the main requirements.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Some owners report memory and boot problems, including needing a single stick in slot A2 and a CMOS clear, or a replacement board for a lit DRAM light.
  • Overall owner ratings are high, at 4.5 on Amazon UK and 4.45 on Micro Center, though those are ratings without text.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want more than one PCIe 5.0 M.2 drive
  • Buyers who need USB4 ports on the rear panel
  • Extreme overclockers pushing heavy voltage and power limits
