New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.

Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
  • A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
  • Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

Known security issues
  • CVE-2022-0715 (2022): An attacker could push firmware updates that are not cryptographically signed securely, so tampered firmware could be installed.

Update recordAdvisories cover Smart-UPS firmware signing and TLS flaws; later revisions reportedly added fixes, but the fixed version for this model is unconfirmed.
LinuxNot confirmed. NUT may work over USB via usbhid-ups, but this was not confirmed, and a sibling model reported a HID detection failure after firmware 04.3. source

The full review

Where it fits

The SMC1000IC is a line-interactive UPS rated at 1000 VA / 600 W. With a 600 W rating and 9 min 9 s of runtime at that full load, it suits a small homelab, a desk-side server or a compact rack where you want protection and a controlled shutdown more than hours of backup.

Output and topology8/10

The output is pure sine wave on battery. Owners praise this because it suits modern power supplies with power factor correction. That is a reasonable point in its favour if your NAS or mini server uses one, since the UPS keeps feeding it a clean waveform when the mains drops.

The topology is line interactive, not online double-conversion. The manufacturer lists a typical transfer time of 6 ms and a maximum of 10 ms. The input voltage range is 180-287V.

Connectivity and shutdown

The unit has an RJ-45 serial port, a USB port and a SmartConnect Ethernet port. APC's PowerChute Business Edition software handles unattended shutdown over a serial or USB cable. That covers machines where you can install the software.

There is one gap you should know about. No source confirmed that Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS or NUT recognise this unit over USB HID. If your NAS relies on its built-in UPS support for automatic shutdown, check compatibility with your platform before you buy.

Owners like the LCD. It shows load, runtime and input voltage, which helps when you are sizing what to plug in.

Runtime and battery5/10

APC publishes 9 min 9 s at the full 600 W load. Owners raise short runtime as a complaint and say it limits the unit to protection and shutdown. With a runtime figure given only at full load and that owner feedback, treat this as a unit for riding out blips and shutting down cleanly, not for working through long outages.

The battery is sealed lead-acid and built in. APC lists the replacement as APCRBC142 and describes it as user-replaceable, with an expected life of 3-5 years. Plan for a battery swap within that window.

Some owner feedback comes from the US 120V model, so treat comments on runtime and display as general rather than specific to the UK unit.

Outlets, build and warranty6/10

There are eight IEC 320 C13 outlets. Certifications listed are CE, GOST, UK PSTI and VDE.

The unit measures 439mm deep, 219mm high and 171mm wide, and weighs 17.27kg. That is heavy for something you might lift into a rack or onto a shelf, so plan the placement.

The manufacturer states a 2-year warranty. One retailer claims a lifetime warranty, which conflicts with that. Go by the manufacturer's figure unless the seller confirms otherwise in writing.

Verdict

The SMC1000IC gives you a 600 W line-interactive UPS with pure sine output, eight C13 outlets and a replaceable battery. The weak points are the short full-load runtime, the unpublished half-load figure and the lack of confirmed USB HID recognition by common NAS platforms. If you can run PowerChute, or you confirm your platform supports it, it fits the job.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the pure sine output for suiting modern PFC power supplies.
  • Owners like the clear LCD showing load, runtime and input voltage.
  • Owners complain that short runtime limits the unit to protection and shutdown.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need long runtime for working through extended outages
  • NAS owners who rely on built-in USB HID UPS support and can't confirm compatibility
  • Buyers who want online double-conversion topology
