New to webcams? What they are and what to look for

A webcam is a small camera that sits on your monitor for video calls and streaming.

Do you need a webcam? Worth it if your laptop's built-in camera looks grainy, or you use a desktop PC without one.

What to look for

  • 1080p is enough for calls; good low-light performance matters more than 4K
  • Autofocus and a built-in privacy shutter
  • Works without extra software on your computer

The full review

Where it fits

The OBSBOT Meet 2 is a compact USB webcam that records up to 4K at 30fps, or 1080p at 60fps. It uses a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor with 48M effective pixels and an f/1.8 aperture. The field of view is 79.4° diagonal. The manufacturer lists a September 2024 launch, although some third-party sites give earlier dates.

It connects over USB Type-C for power and video, and it also has a USB 2.0 data port. The body measures 45 x 36 x 22.2mm and weighs 40.5g without the mount, or 67.5g with it.

That makes it a fit for people who want better video on calls, streams or recordings from a single camera, with autofocus and framing handled for them.

Picture quality8/10

Reviewers praise the image for sharpness and for 4K detail. The specifications give a clear basis for that. A 1/2-inch sensor with 48M effective pixels feeds the 4K30 mode, and the f/1.8 aperture is listed alongside it.

You also get a choice of frame rate. The 1080p mode runs at 60fps, which is double the frame rate of the 4K mode. If you stream or record movement, you can pick resolution or frame rate depending on the job.

The manufacturer lists 4x digital zoom. The 79.4° diagonal field of view sets how much of the room the camera takes in before any zoom is applied.

Autofocus and AI framing

Focus uses phase-detection autofocus, with a manual focus option for people who want to fix the point themselves. The listed focus distance runs from 10cm to infinity. With that close limit, holding an item up to the lens for a demo or a product shot is within the camera's stated range.

Reviewers praise the fast autofocus and the AI framing.

Low light6/10

This is the contested area. On paper, the 1/2-inch sensor and f/1.8 aperture suit a dim room. Reviewers don't agree that results match that promise. If your desk sits in a poorly lit room, plan to add a lamp rather than counting on the camera alone.

Microphone5/10

The camera has built-in dual omni-directional microphones with noise reduction and auto gain. Reviewers say the audio is adequate but not studio quality. That fits everyday calls where you want to be heard without extra kit. For podcasts, streaming or recording where voice quality matters, a separate microphone is the safer choice.

Privacy and build8/10

A magnetic privacy cover comes in the box, so you can block the lens physically when you aren't on a call. Reviewers point out that the cover can be lost. A small magnetic part that comes off the camera is easy to misplace, so decide where it lives when it isn't in use.

The low weight, 40.5g without the mount, keeps the camera light. The 67.5g figure includes the mount.

Compatibility6/10

The stated system requirements are Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later. The manufacturer's spec page has no Linux entry. That doesn't prove the camera fails on Linux, but it does mean there is no stated support. If you run Linux on your main machine, check before you buy.

The camera works over a single USB Type-C connection for power and video. The USB 2.0 data port is listed separately.

Who it suits

The Meet 2 suits Windows and Mac users who want sharp 4K video, quick autofocus and automatic framing in a small body. The privacy cover adds a physical way to block the lens. Reviewer comments on the microphone and low-light performance are the points to weigh against that. If you work in a dim room or depend on built-in audio, those are the areas where the spec sheet shows doubt.
