New to webcams? What they are and what to look for

A webcam is a small camera that sits on your monitor for video calls and streaming.

Do you need a webcam? Worth it if your laptop's built-in camera looks grainy, or you use a desktop PC without one.

What to look for

  • 1080p is enough for calls; good low-light performance matters more than 4K
  • Autofocus and a built-in privacy shutter
  • Works without extra software on your computer

The full review

Where it fits

The MX Brio is a 4K webcam aimed at regular video calls. It records 4K at 30 fps (3840×2160) and 1080p at 60 fps (1920×1080). It connects over USB-C with USB 3.0, and the 1.5 m cable is detachable.

Owner feedback is mixed. People like the picture and the privacy shutter. They complain about the price and the software.

Picture quality7/10

The resolution options give you a choice. 4K at 30 fps suits calls where detail matters. 1080p at 60 fps gives smoother motion at a lower resolution. Owners and reviewers repeatedly praise the image quality, which fits a camera that outputs 4K.

Field of view has three presets: 90°, 78° and 65° diagonal, as reported by reviewers. Advanced Autofocus is listed, along with 4x digital zoom. The wide setting helps if you want more of the room in shot. The narrow one suits a tight desk framing.

Low light7/10

Logitech says the sensor has 70% larger pixels than the Brio 4K. Owners back this up in general terms, praising low-light gains. If your desk sits in a dim corner, the larger pixels and owner praise are the points in its favour.

Privacy shutter and desk features7/10

Owners praise the built-in privacy shutter. A ring around the lens rotates it closed. The shutter does not block the microphone, so a closed shutter does not mean the mic is off. If that matters to you, mute it in your call software or unplug the cable.

Show Mode lets you tilt the camera to show your desk. That helps with demonstrations and hardware walkthroughs. Owners report needing to make adjustments to Show Mode in the software, and they count that among the software complaints.

Auto-framing is unclear. One review says the camera does not auto-frame or track. Another lists AI auto-framing. With reviews in conflict, check the current product page before you buy if this feature matters.

Software and compatibility4/10

Logitech software is needed for some features, and it is available only for Windows and macOS. Owners call software a weak point. They cite missing features, firmware updates being needed and the Show Mode adjustments.

It also does not say anything about Linux support. A homelabber or developer on Linux should confirm that before buying. With the software limited to two operating systems, Linux users may not get the features that rely on it.

Owners also note there is no Windows Hello face login. If you want to sign in with your face, this camera does not offer it.

Microphone5/10

The MX Brio has dual beamforming, noise-reducing microphones. That should cover casual calls without a separate mic.

Price and who it suits

Owners say the price is high for a webcam. Separately, they praise the picture quality, low-light gains and the shutter. The software limits and missing Windows Hello pull in the other direction.

The camera suits someone on Windows or macOS who takes many calls and values a physical shutter.
