Zyxel XMG1915-10E
7.4out of 10verdict: buy

The Zyxel XMG1915-10E is for people who want 2.5GbE on most ports and 10G uplinks in a quiet, fanless switch. It suits homelabbers and small offices whose devices bring their own power, since it has no PoE.

New to network switches? What they are and what to look for

A network switch adds more wired Ethernet sockets to your home network, like a power strip does for plugs. You connect it to your router with one cable.

Do you need a network switch? Useful if your router has run out of Ethernet ports, or you want wired connections for a TV, games console, desk or NAS.

What to look for

  • Enough ports, with a couple spare
  • Gigabit is fine for most homes; 2.5GbE helps with a fast NAS
  • Fanless designs are silent; managed switches add features most homes don't need

The full review

Where it fits

The XMG1915-10E is a ten-port Smart Managed switch from Zyxel. Eight ports are RJ-45 and support 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps. The other two are SFP slots that take 1G or 10G SFP+ modules. Zyxel's datasheet covers three XMG1915 models, and this is the one with no PoE ports.

With eight 2.5GbE copper ports and no PoE, it suits a network of devices that have their own power supplies. It is a poor match if you want the switch to power access points or cameras.

Port speedsPort speeds 8/10Port count and uplinks 8/10

The copper ports run at 100Mbps, 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps. Because all three speeds are listed, older gigabit gear can share the switch with 2.5GbE devices. You do not need to separate them. The eight copper ports are the only ones listed at 2.5Gbps; the two SFP+ slots are listed at 1G or 10G.

The two uplink slots take 1G SFP or 10G SFP+. That gives a 10G link to another switch or a server, provided the other end has a matching port. Zyxel lists 80Gbps of switching capacity and a 59.5Mpps forwarding rate.

The gap is copper 10GbE. Owner feedback says reviewers wanted two copper 10GbE ports, and the spec sheet lists none. Any 10G connection here goes through the SFP+ slots.

Management7/10

Zyxel sells the XMG1915-10E as Smart Managed. Zyxel publishes a datasheet that covers all three XMG1915 models, a series specifications page and a user guide for this model. Check that the VLAN, monitoring and security options you need are in it.

Noise, power and cooling9/10

The switch is fanless. Owner feedback on this point is consistent: people describe quiet running and low power draw. With no fan, a switch like this can sit in a living space or on a desk without adding noise. The basis is the fanless design and those owner reports. The specifications here give no decibel rating or power figure, so the owner reports are the only guide to noise and power draw.

The switch has no PoE ports, and the spec sheet lists no PoE power budget.

Ports and uplinksPort speeds 8/10Port count and uplinks 8/10

The switch has ten ports in total. Eight are copper and two are uplinks. Both SFP+ slots are listed as 1G SFP or 10G SFP+, so they take either speed. If your plan is eight 2.5GbE devices and one or two links to the rest of the network, the layout fits. If you expect to add more devices later, you will fill the copper ports quickly and need a second switch. The two SFP+ slots would carry that link.

Firmware and supportPort speeds 8/10Port count and uplinks 8/10Firmware and support 5/10

The spec sheet lists a user guide at V4.80 and a Zyxel series specifications page. It does not give a firmware release history or warranty terms. Check both with Zyxel or your retailer before relying on the switch for anything important.

Who it suits

This is a switch for a small 2.5GbE network with 10G uplinks. Owners point to its quiet, low-power running. Its limits are clear from the specifications: no PoE, no copper 10GbE and a ten-port total. If those match your setup, it is a sensible fit. If not, the spec sheet will show you quickly.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners report low power draw and quiet, fanless operation.
  • Reviewers wanted two copper 10GbE ports, which the switch does not have.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need PoE to power access points or cameras
  • Buyers who want copper 10GbE ports rather than SFP+ slots
  • Buyers who need more than ten ports on one switch
