New to motherboards? What they are and what to look for
The motherboard is the main circuit board of a desktop PC. Every other part plugs into it: the processor, memory, graphics card, SSDs and the cables to the case.
Do you need a motherboard? Only if you're building or upgrading a desktop. Choose it after the processor, because the two must use the same socket.
What to look for
- The socket that matches your processor (AM5, AM4, LGA1851 or LGA1700)
- The size your case takes: ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX
- Enough M.2 slots, USB ports and built-in Wi-Fi or 2.5GbE if you want them

Where it fits
The MSI PRO B760M-A WIFI DDR4 is a micro-ATX board (243.84 x 243.84 mm) for LGA 1700 CPUs, built on the Intel B760 chipset. Its defining feature is the memory: four DDR4 DIMM slots, up to 128GB, dual-channel, non-ECC and unbuffered. XMP is supported. JEDEC speeds run from 2133 to 3200 MHz, with overclocking listed up to 5333 MHz. If you already own DDR4, that is the reason to buy this board.
Don't confuse it with the DDR5 sibling, the PRO B760M-A WIFI. The two share a name apart from the DDR4 suffix, and they take different memory.
Expansion and storage
The graphics slot, PCI_E1, is PCIe 4.0 up to x16 from the CPU. There is no PCIe 5.0 slot on this board. For a buyer who wants a PCIe 5.0 graphics card or NVMe drive, that is a clear limit. For a PCIe 4.0 build it is less of an issue.
Storage gets two M.2 slots, both PCIe 4.0 x4. M.2_1 connects to the CPU. M.2_2 connects through the chipset, or can run in SATA mode. Both take 2280, 2260 and 2242 drives. There are also four SATA 6G ports. One SATA port is disabled if M.2_2 holds a SATA SSD, so a build that mixes a SATA M.2 drive with four SATA disks loses one port.
In total the board has two PCIe x16 slots and one PCIe x1 slot. PCI_E3 is PCIe 4.0 and runs at up to x4 from the chipset. PCI_E2 is PCIe 3.0 x1, also from the chipset. Because PCI_E1 is the only slot fed by the CPU, and the other two run from the chipset, the board suits a single-GPU desktop more than an expansion-heavy build.
Connectivity5/10
Networking is a Realtek RTL8125BG 2.5G LAN port and Intel Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi 7 is not listed. MSI's listing also indicates that 6GHz availability on Wi-Fi 6E may depend on country regulations, so check that before relying on the 6GHz band.
The rear USB layout is plain. There are two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 5Gbps Type-A ports and two USB 10Gbps Type-A ports. There is no rear USB-C and no USB4. A single front USB-C header runs at 5Gbps. With six rear ports and only two at 10Gbps, anyone with several fast external SSDs will fill the quicker ports quickly. A USB-C-only device needs the front header or an adapter.
Power delivery6/10
MSI describes a 12-phase core power design with DRPS and P-PAK, with 8-pin and 4-pin power connectors. Vivid Repairs describes a 10+1+1 phase design, which conflicts with MSI's figure. The two descriptions can't both be right, so treat the exact phase count as unresolved.
Owner reports and BIOS6/10
Owner feedback is short and positive. Best Buy reviewers report stable operation with no problems. Others mention reliable Wi-Fi, fast M.2 slots and good value for a gaming PC.
MSI doesn't list BIOS flashback on its specification page.
Verdict
This is a sensible board for a DDR4 LGA 1700 build. It has two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots, four SATA ports, 2.5GbE and built-in Wi-Fi 6E, which covers the basics of a gaming PC. The limits are the absence of PCIe 5.0, no rear USB-C or USB4 and only two 10Gbps rear ports. Choose it to reuse DDR4 memory in a gaming PC, where owners describe good value. Look elsewhere if you want the newest connectivity.
