New to PC cases? What they are and what to look for

The case is the box that holds a desktop PC's parts, keeps them cool with fans and airflow, and sets how big and loud the finished PC is.

Do you need a PC case? Every desktop build needs one. It's also the part people see, so looks matter more here than anywhere else.

What to look for

  • Room for your graphics card's length and your CPU cooler's height
  • A mesh front panel and included fans for cooler, quieter running
  • The motherboard size it takes, and whether it fits on or under your desk

The full review

Where it fits

The D31 MESH Black takes ITX, DTX and M-ATX motherboards. It has a mesh front panel and a tempered glass side panel. The steel panels are 0.6 mm and 0.7 mm thick. It offers four PCI expansion slots and takes an ATX power supply in one of four mounting positions.

That makes it a case for a compact but capable build. The board support is limited to smaller formats, so full ATX boards are out. Within that limit, the layout leaves room for large components.

Cooling and airflow7/10

The front is mesh, and the fan mounts cover the top, bottom, rear and front. The top takes three 120 mm or two 140 mm fans. The bottom takes the same. The rear takes one 120 mm fan and the front takes one 120 mm fan.

Radiator support is broad. The top takes 240, 280 or 360 mm radiators. The bottom takes 240 or 360 mm. The rear takes a 120 mm unit. Caseking says the bottom fans are offset so intake air passes the GPU. Owners praise temperatures and airflow, which fits that mesh front and the number of fan positions.

The catch is that no fans come with the case. Anyone buying it needs to budget for fans before the airflow potential becomes real. A PCPartPicker owner also notes there is no dust filter for the front fan mounts. If the front mount is in use, dust will reach it unfiltered.

Space and compatibility8/10

Graphics card clearance is listed as 330–400 mm, and the limit depends on where the PSU sits. A longer card therefore needs a PSU position that leaves it room. The maximum PSU length runs from 100 to 220 mm, again depending on the position chosen. Owners report fitting large GPUs and a 360 mm AIO, which matches the radiator and clearance specifications.

CPU cooler height tops out at 168 mm, so check the exact height of any cooler you have in mind before buying.

Storage is modest. The case holds one 3.5-inch drive and two 2.5-inch drives. With that allowance, it suits a build built around an NVMe drive or two plus a small amount of extra storage. It does not suit a bulk-storage machine.

Building in it6/10

Easy building is one of the recurring points in owner feedback. That praise sits alongside a complaint about cable routing.

The case supports a large radiator and a long GPU, and owners report fitting both. Given the cable routing complaint, plan the routing before final assembly.

Noise and fans5/10

Because no fans are supplied, noise depends entirely on what you fit. The case offers 120 mm and 140 mm mounts at the top and bottom, so there is a choice between more small fans and fewer larger ones. The mesh front prioritises airflow, and owner feedback centres on temperatures rather than quietness. Buyers who want a quiet machine should pick their fans with that in mind.

Verdict

The D31 MESH Black offers flexible cooling and generous GPU and radiator space for an M-ATX-and-smaller case. Owners praise the easy build, the temperatures and the room for large parts. The drawbacks are plain: no fans, no front dust filter and cable routing that owners complain about. It suits a builder who already knows what fans and cooler they want, and who is comfortable spending time on cable management.
