New to motherboards? What they are and what to look for
The motherboard is the main circuit board of a desktop PC. Every other part plugs into it: the processor, memory, graphics card, SSDs and the cables to the case.
Do you need a motherboard? Only if you're building or upgrading a desktop. Choose it after the processor, because the two must use the same socket.
What to look for
- The socket that matches your processor (AM5, AM4, LGA1851 or LGA1700)
- The size your case takes: ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX
- Enough M.2 slots, USB ports and built-in Wi-Fi or 2.5GbE if you want them

The full review
Where it fits
The ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi is an ATX board for AM5, covering Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series CPUs. It uses the AMD B850 chipset, a mid-tier option. It has four DDR5 slots, dual-channel memory and a listed maximum of 256GB on ASUS's current spec page. Memory speeds go up to 8000+ MT/s with overclocking on Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000. It supports both ECC and non-ECC unbuffered modules.
Storage and expansion
The board has four M.2 slots. M.2_1 and M.2_2 run at PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs. With Ryzen 8000 they drop to PCIe 4.0 x4. M.2_3 and M.2_4 are PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset. M.2_3 is disabled when the chipset-fed x16 slot is in use, so that second long slot has a storage cost.
The main graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16 with ASUS's Q-Release Slim and SafeSlot design, for Ryzen 7000 and 9000. The second x16 slot is PCIe 4.0 and runs in x4 mode from the chipset.
There are only two SATA 6Gb/s ports. With four M.2 slots and two SATA ports, the board suits NVMe-first builds more than ones with several SATA drives.
Connectivity7/10
Networking is an Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 7 (2x2 802.11be) across 2.4, 5 and 6GHz, with 160MHz channels and up to 2.9Gbps. Bluetooth is 5.4. A 2.5GbE port plus Wi-Fi 7 covers fast home networking, though there is no faster wired option on the board.
The rear panel has 12 USB ports. One is a 20Gbps USB-C. Three are 10Gbps, two Type-A and one Type-C. Four are 5Gbps Type-A and four are USB 2.0 Type-A. There is no rear USB4 port. The 20Gbps port is the fastest rear option, so fast external SSDs have one clear home, and the remaining ports cover peripherals and older devices. The port count is high, but most of it sits at 5Gbps or below.
Power delivery8/10
TechPowerUp lists the CPU power as 16-phase, with 2-phase SoC and 2-phase MISC. PC Gamer reports 20 power stages rated at 80A each, with 16 serving the CPU. That reviewer expects the board to handle a 170W Ryzen 9 9950X. That is an expectation rather than a test result, but a 16-phase CPU design with 80A stages is a sound basis for the top chips in the socket.
One B850-F owner does report CPU temperatures of about 91°C under load. That is a single report with no detail on the CPU or cooler, so it points to a thing to watch rather than a pattern.
BIOS and owner reports6/10
The board has a 256 Mb AMI UEFI BIOS with a BIOS FlashBack button, EZ Flash 3 and CrashFree BIOS 3. A third-party BIOS history lists AGESA 1.2.0.3C, which improved stability with four DIMMs and 256GB, and AGESA 1.2.7.0, which improved USB compatibility.
Owner feedback is thin and mixed. One forum user reports BIOS freezes and UI quirks when enabling Turbo Mode or Core Tuning. That user found the board stable in JEDEC and DOCP memory modes and suggests rolling back to an older BIOS. Another B850-F owner reports occasional undetected USB devices. With a small number of reports, it is hard to say how widespread these problems are, but anyone planning manual tuning should read the current BIOS notes before updating.
Who it suits
It suits a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 build with one fast graphics card and a couple of fast NVMe drives, where Wi-Fi 7 and a 20Gbps rear port are useful. The power design supports high-core CPUs. It suits that buyer better than someone filling the case with SATA drives, or needing rear USB4. The board's strengths are its slot layout, networking and CPU power. The reported BIOS quirks mean it is best used at default or DOCP memory settings until you have checked how your own configuration behaves.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- One owner reports BIOS freezes and UI quirks when enabling Turbo Mode or Core Tuning.
- The same owner found JEDEC and DOCP memory modes stable and suggests rolling back to an older BIOS.
- A B850-F owner reports occasional undetected USB devices.
- One owner reports CPU temperatures of about 91°C under load.
Who should skip it
- Builders who need many SATA ports for bulk drive storage
- Buyers who want a rear USB4 port
- Anyone planning heavy manual BIOS tuning who wants minimal reported quirks
