New to NAS? What they are and what to look for

A NAS (network-attached storage) is a small box of hard drives that sits on your home network. Every phone, laptop and TV in the house can save to it and play from it, and it can back up your computers automatically.

Do you need a NAS? Worth it if you have more photos and files than fit comfortably on one computer, want automatic backups, or want to run a media server like Plex. If you only need backups, a cloud service or an external drive is simpler.

What to look for

  • Number of drive bays: two is enough for most homes and lets one drive copy the other
  • The software: Synology's is the easiest; others give more hardware for the money
  • Drives are usually sold separately, so budget for them

Security and compatibility

Latest firmware or softwareNo release date found
Known security issuesNone found in public advisories. That's a good sign, not a guarantee.
Update recordNo firmware release date or CVEs were confirmed for the DXP2800; the searches were incomplete, and the UGOS version numbers found come from third-party or sibling-model sources.
LinuxPartly works on Linux. Evidence suggests Linux runs on the hardware and as a VM, but it comes from a sibling-model review and a user Q&A, so it is not confirmed for the DXP2800. source

The full review

Where it fits

The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 is a two-bay NAS built around an Intel N100 processor. It has 8GB of DDR5 memory, one 2.5GbE port and two M.2 NVMe slots alongside the two SATA bays. It runs UGREEN's own operating system, UGOS Pro, and comes with a two-year warranty.

The hardware looks aimed at home file storage, backups and light container work. The software is where owners and reviewers have the most reservations.

Storage7/10

The two bays take 3.5-inch HDDs, 2.5-inch HDDs and 2.5-inch SSDs. UGREEN lists a maximum capacity of 80TB, made up of two 32TB hard drives and two 8TB SSDs.

The unit also has two M.2 NVMe slots. The sources give the slot count but not how UGREEN intends them to be used, so check the product page before planning around them.

The sources list no PCIe expansion slot. The storage you buy at the start is therefore what the unit will offer: two bays and two NVMe slots.

Processor

The Intel N100 is a 12th Gen N Series chip with 4 cores and 4 threads. That is enough to describe it as a modest, general-purpose processor for file serving and a handful of services.

The research doesn't give hardware transcoding details, so anyone planning a media server with several streams should look for that information before buying.

Memory5/10

The unit ships with 8GB of DDR5 and can be expanded to 16GB. A reviewer points out that there is only one RAM slot, so the upgrade path is limited. With a 16GB ceiling and a single slot, it suits a modest set of containers better than several virtual machines running at once.

Networking7/10

There is one 2.5GbE port. That is faster than a basic gigabit connection. It is the only wired connection listed. The unit does not offer Wi-Fi.

With one port, there is no listed way to split traffic across a second connection. For a household or small office with a handful of users, a single 2.5GbE link is a sensible match for a two-bay box.

Software4/10

UGOS Pro is the weak point in the research. One reviewer says it is not as mature as Synology or QNAP systems. Owner feedback agrees: they report limited apps and features compared with those two brands.

Owners also describe a difficult initial setup and thin documentation. The research doesn't say how much control the OS gives over the underlying system.

The sources don't say whether another operating system can be installed. If that matters to you, confirm it before buying.

What owners say

Owner reports split cleanly along hardware and software lines. The hardware gets praise for being quiet and solid, and the unit is described as easy to set up in some reports. Against that, others call the first setup difficult and the documentation thin.

Owners also complain of the smaller app and feature set next to Synology and QNAP. That sits alongside the reviewer's comment on UGOS Pro's maturity.

Who it suits

The DXP2800 makes sense if you want a quiet two-bay NAS with 2.5GbE and two NVMe slots, and you can accept a less mature operating system. The specs favour file storage, backups and light container use. The single RAM slot and 16GB ceiling count against heavier virtualisation.

If a deep app catalogue or polished documentation is your priority, the owner and reviewer comments point to the software as the main compromise.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise the quiet, solid hardware and say setup is easy.
  • Some owners complain of limited apps and features compared with Synology or QNAP.
  • Others report a difficult initial setup and thin documentation.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who want the app ecosystem and maturity of Synology or QNAP.
  • Anyone planning several VMs who needs more than 16GB of RAM.
  • Users who need more than two drive bays or a faster network connection.
