New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.
Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.
What to look for
- Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
- A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
- Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

The full review
Where it fits
The ERA PLUS 800 is a line-interactive UPS from Tecnoware Power Systems, released in November 2022. It is listed at 800 VA, with automatic voltage regulation and a typical transfer time of 2 ms. It has two UK-type outputs and a BS1363 input cable.
The manufacturer's own limits narrow the range of kit it suits. Those limits matter more than the headline capacity figure.
Capacity and a conflicting figure6/10
The datasheet gives 560 W as the maximum computer power application. The same datasheet's output table shows 240 W active power. The two numbers do not agree, and the research does not explain why.
Overload capability is listed as under 130%. Because the figures conflict, anyone planning to load it close to the higher one should confirm the real limit with Tecnoware first.
Waveform and the PFC warning5/10
The output is a modified sinewave. The manufacturer states the unit is not suitable for power supplies with active PFC. It names servers, gaming PCs, consoles, workstations and Macs. It also rules out lamps and motors.
With that warning in the manufacturer's documents, it makes sense to check the label or manual of each power supply before connecting it. The research does not say which NAS or networking units fall on which side.
Monitoring and shutdown
The UK 800 datasheet lists the interface as "-", so it shows no USB or network connection. That matters for anyone who wants a NAS or server to shut down cleanly when the battery runs low. The research gives no listed route for that signal on this model.
TecnoManager management software is available to download. The datasheet says it is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, Unix and Linux. The research does not explain how it would talk to a unit with no listed interface, so treat that as unresolved.
One owner reports long-term use with a Synology NAS over USB, shutting it down on low battery. That report covers the ERA PLUS STRIP model, not the 800. It should not be read as confirmation for this unit.
Runtime and battery4/10
The battery is a 12V 7Ah sealed lead-acid type, described as maintenance free. Typical backup time is given as 10 to 40 minutes, with the load not stated. That range cannot be tied to a specific device.
Owner reports point to short runtime on heavier equipment. One reviewer reports about 2 minutes with an HP Z620 workstation and returned two units. Another owner reports a unit cutting out during outages after a few weeks, along with an overload alarm they found annoying. The research does not say whether the battery is user-replaceable.
Outlets and build4/10
Both outputs have blackout and child protection, and one also has overvoltage protection. The research does not list a separate surge rating or a warranty length. The unit has two outputs in total.
The unit measures 10.1 x 14.2 x 27.9 cm and weighs 3.9 kg. Noise is listed below 40 dBA at 1 m. Owners praise easy installation and quiet operation, which fits those numbers.
Verdict
The ERA PLUS 800 reads as a basic backup unit for small, simple loads that do not use active PFC power supplies. The conflicting capacity figures, the absence of a listed interface and the runtime complaints all point to checking details before buying. The strengths are its line-interactive design with AVR, UK plugs, quiet running and easy setup. For automatic shutdown of a NAS or server, the specifications give little to rely on.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Backup time is short on higher-draw kit, with about 2 minutes on an HP Z620 workstation and one reviewer returning two units.
- Owners praise easy installation and quiet operation.
- One long-term owner praises Synology NAS shutdown over USB, but that review covers the ERA PLUS STRIP model.
- Another owner reports the unit cutting out during outages after a few weeks, plus an annoying overload alarm.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need USB or network monitoring for automatic NAS or server shutdown
- Anyone protecting servers, workstations, gaming PCs or other active PFC power supplies
- Users who need more than two outlets or long runtime on heavier loads
