New to mechanical keyboards? What they are and what to look for

A keyboard with a separate switch under every key. They feel more precise, last longer and can be customised.

Do you need a mechanical keyboard? A nice upgrade if you type a lot. It's a matter of taste rather than necessity.

The full review

Where it fits

The MX Mechanical Mini is a compact wireless keyboard from Logitech. Some give 65% or 75%, while Best Buy lists it as 60%. It measures 312.60 × 131.55 × 26.10 mm and weighs 612 g. You pick Tactile Quiet, Clicky or Linear switches when you buy.

The UK store page does not let you select a UK ISO layout. If you type on ISO, check this before you order.

Typing feel5/10

The choice of three switch types is the main strength here. The options are Tactile Quiet, Clicky and Linear, and you settle on one at purchase rather than swapping later.

Owners list stabiliser rattle and noise as a complaint. The spec sheet gives no stabiliser design and no sound measurements, so there is little more to say. If you type near other people, weigh that owner feedback carefully.

Build quality6/10

Sources differ on the materials. Logitech lists a low-carbon aluminium topcase. Gadgetoid describes a plastic base with a top plate of roughly 1 mm aluminium. Either way, owners praise the board as sturdy with no chassis flex, and the 612 g weight fits that description.

The keycaps are ABS.

Customisation3/10

This is the weakest area. The firmware is not QMK or VIA. Customisation goes through Logi Options+, which runs on Windows and macOS. Best Buy lists zero programmable keys, and owners complain about the software limits. If you want to remap freely or keep your settings in the keyboard's own firmware, the specifications do not support that.

Connectivity6/10

You get Bluetooth Low Energy and a Logi Bolt USB receiver. Easy-Switch pairs up to three devices, so one keyboard can cover a laptop, a desktop and a tablet. A Mac variant exists, and Options+ supports macOS.

The USB-C port is described for charging. If you need either, check with Logitech first.

Battery8/10

The 1500 mAh rechargeable Li-Po charges over USB-C. Logitech quotes up to 15 days with backlighting on and up to 10 months with it off. With backlighting on, that figure means charging roughly every two weeks at best. Owners praise the battery life.

Layout and typing angleTyping feel 5/10Layout and ergonomics 3/10

The compact footprint saves desk space. The layout question is unsettled, though: sources give 65%, 75% and 60%, and the UK store page offers no ISO selection. Best Buy lists no adjustable tilt, so the typing angle is fixed.

Price and warranty

Owners complain about the price. Warranty details also vary by source. Logitech's US page lists a one-year limited hardware warranty, while Tom's Hardware gives two years for the EMEA MX Mechanical family. Confirm the UK term at purchase.

Who it suits

The board suits someone who wants a compact, solid-feeling wireless keyboard, a choice of switch type and a battery that runs for months with the backlight off. It works for a user who moves between up to three devices and is happy with Logitech's software for basic setup.

It is a weaker fit if you want open firmware, hot-swap sockets, wired use, a tilt adjustment or a confirmed UK ISO layout. The stabiliser complaints also matter if you share a workspace.
