New to headsets? What they are and what to look for

A headset is headphones with a microphone, for calls, gaming and shutting out noise.

Do you need a headset? Worth it if you're on calls a lot, game online, or work somewhere noisy.

What to look for

  • A clear microphone (a boom mic is clearest)
  • Comfort for hours of wear
  • Noise cancelling if you work somewhere noisy, and long battery life if wireless

The full review

Where it fits

The Evolve2 65 is a wireless headset built around office and unified communications work. Jabra lists it as meeting Microsoft Teams Open Office requirements and as certified with leading UC vendors. It was released in May 2020 and comes in stereo and mono versions. Connection is Bluetooth 5.0 or a USB-A/USB-C Bluetooth adapter.

That feature set points to a desk-and-calls headset. The sections below cover where it is strong and where owners and the spec sheet show limits.

Microphone7/10

The microphone is a digital MEMS unit with a listed frequency range of 100Hz to 8,000Hz. Owners praise its clarity and its filtering of background noise. For a headset aimed at calls, that owner feedback supports putting the mic among your reasons to buy if most of your day is spent in meetings.

Connectivity and battery8/10

The headset holds two simultaneous Bluetooth connections. Its pairing list stores up to eight devices.

Jabra lists up to 37 hours of music and up to 35 hours of talk time with the busylight off. Switch the busylight on and talk time drops to up to 24 hours. A full charge takes up to 90 minutes. Owners single out the battery life as a point of praise. The power input is rated at 5V/500mA, and Jabra does not publish idle or load wattage.

Sound5/10

The speakers are 40mm. The only audio codec listed is SBC, with no AAC, aptX or LDAC. With SBC alone, the headset reads as a call-first design rather than one aimed at people who want a specific music codec.

Noise isolation3/10

There is no active noise cancelling. Jabra lists passive noise cancellation only. Owners complain about weak noise isolation, which is consistent with that spec. In a busy open-plan office, this is the main limit to weigh against the microphone and battery strengths.

There is a separate model, the Evolve2 65 Flex, which is lighter and has ANC. It is a different product and none of the details here apply to it.

Comfort and weight5/10

The stereo version weighs 176.4g and the mono version 99.2g. Owner comfort reports are mixed. Clamping pressure is a recurring complaint. On weight, SoundGuys calls the headset heavy, while Headset Advisor found it lighter than expected.

If you wear a headset for long stretches and are sensitive to clamping force, the owner complaints are worth taking seriously before you buy.

Who it suits

The Evolve2 65 suits people who live in Teams or another certified UC platform and want a mic that owners say handles background noise well. The battery ratings and dual Bluetooth connection suit someone moving between a laptop and a phone through the day.

It suits fewer people who need quiet in a noisy room, since it has passive isolation only and owners flag that. Anyone who cares about codec choice for music should note the SBC-only listing. And anyone sensitive to clamping pressure should weigh the mixed comfort reports.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Clamping pressure and comfort draw complaints from some owners.
  • Noise isolation is weak without active noise cancelling.
  • Battery life is praised as long.
  • Microphone clarity and background noise filtering are praised.
  • Weight reports are mixed: SoundGuys calls it heavy, Headset Advisor found it lighter than expected.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need active noise cancelling for noisy open-plan offices
  • Listeners who want AAC, aptX or LDAC codec support for music
  • People sensitive to clamping pressure who wear a headset all day
