Lexar ES3 Portable SSD
5.5out of 10verdict: wait for deal

The Lexar ES3 is a small USB 3.2 Gen 2 portable SSD for people who move files between a laptop and a phone. It suits everyday backups, photo libraries and project folders rather than workloads that need the fastest transfers.

New to External SSDs? What they are and what to look for

An external SSD is a pocket-sized drive that plugs into a USB port. It's much faster and tougher than a USB stick or an old external hard drive.

Do you need an external SSD? Good for backing up a laptop, carrying big files between computers, or editing video and photos from a fast drive.

What to look for

  • A USB-C cable in the box, plus USB-A if your computers are older
  • Speed: 1,000MB/s is plenty for most; faster needs a matching port
  • Rugged or water-resistant designs if it travels with you

The full review

Where it fits

The Lexar ES3 is a pocket-sized external SSD released in December 2024. The version covered here is 512GB and connects over USB 3.2 Gen 2. It measures 100.6mm × 50mm × 10.5mm and weighs 45g, although one eBay listing gives 43g. Lexar lists support for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. That combination points to someone who copies files between a laptop and a phone, rather than someone building a high-throughput workstation drive.

Speed6/10

Lexar quotes sequential reads of up to 1,050MB/s and writes of up to 1,000MB/s. Those figures come from Lexar's internal testing, and actual speed depends on the host device. They are "up to" numbers, so treat them as a ceiling rather than a guarantee.

With that ceiling on the interface, the ES3 suits photo libraries, backups, project folders and disk images. It is less suited to work where transfer time is the main bottleneck and you want the fastest connection available. The USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface is the stated limit, and nothing in the specifications suggests the drive goes beyond it.

Build and durability5/10

Lexar gives the ES3 a 2-metre anti-drop rating. It does not publish a water rating, so there is no stated protection against splashes or immersion. The research does not give the casing material either. Operating temperature runs from 0°C to 50°C, and storage temperature from −40°C to 85°C.

Read the drop rating alongside the warranty terms. Drop damage is not covered by the warranty, so the rating tells you what Lexar says the drive can take, but a fall that breaks it is your cost. Owners also report that the drive can feel warm during extended use. That is worth knowing if you plan long copy jobs, though the research gives no temperature figures for it.

Security4/10

Lexar supplies DataShield software, described as 256-bit AES encryption. No hardware encryption is described. Protection therefore depends on software you install and use. If you carry sensitive data and want encryption handled by the drive itself, the listing does not describe that.

Compatibility6/10

Lexar's pages list Mac (OS X 10.6 and later), Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, iOS, and Android 4.4 and later. Linux and consoles are not listed on Lexar's pages. That does not mean they fail. It means the manufacturer makes no stated support claim, which matters if you run a Linux desktop or want a drive for a console.

Owner feedback is positive on ease of use. Buyers praise the plug-and-play setup, with no extra software or drivers needed. Owners also single out iPhone 15 and 16 compatibility as a day-to-day benefit. With iOS and Android both listed, that fits the phone-to-laptop use the drive seems aimed at.

Warranty6/10

The ES3 carries a 3-year limited warranty. The research does not describe the terms in detail beyond one exclusion: drop damage is not covered. For a drive pitched on a 2-metre drop rating, that exclusion is the clause to read before you buy.

Who it suits

The ES3 suits buyers who want a small, light drive for everyday file transfers across Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. Its Gen 2 speeds, 3-year warranty and plug-and-play behaviour fit that job. Its limits are equally clear from the specifications: software-only encryption, no published water rating, no listed Linux or console support, and a warranty that excludes drop damage.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise plug-and-play setup with no extra software or drivers needed.
  • iPhone 15 and 16 compatibility is noted as a day-to-day benefit.
  • The drive can feel warm during extended use.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need hardware encryption built into the drive
  • Linux or console users who want manufacturer-listed support
  • Anyone who wants a published water rating or the fastest transfers available
