New to External SSDs? What they are and what to look for
An external SSD is a pocket-sized drive that plugs into a USB port. It's much faster and tougher than a USB stick or an old external hard drive.
Do you need an external SSD? Good for backing up a laptop, carrying big files between computers, or editing video and photos from a fast drive.
What to look for
- A USB-C cable in the box, plus USB-A if your computers are older
- Speed: 1,000MB/s is plenty for most; faster needs a matching port
- Rugged or water-resistant designs if it travels with you

The full review
Where it fits
The Crucial X10 Portable SSD in 2TB form connects over USB-C using USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20Gb/s. Crucial lists sequential reads of up to 2,100MB/s. The drive is bus-powered through USB-C, and none of the sources give a power draw figure. Reviewers praise its speed, value and compact build. The main owner complaint is the lack of hardware encryption.
Speed8/10
Read speed is consistent across the research. Crucial quotes up to 2,100MB/s, and reviewers report about 2,095MB/s reads. Reviewers call the performance very good and the fastest portable SSD tested.
Write speed is less clear. Sources give 2,100MB/s, 2,000MB/s and about 1,900MB/s. TechRadar reports 3,630MB/s, which exceeds the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 ceiling, so that figure is hard to rely on. The other three cluster between roughly 1,900MB/s and 2,100MB/s.
Full speed needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 host. A single source says the drive falls back to Gen 2 speeds on Mac, PS5 and Xbox. If your computer or console lacks Gen 2x2, you will not see the headline numbers.
Build and ruggedness6/10
Crucial lists IP65 dust and water resistance and drop resistance to 3m. Gaming PC Guru disagrees. It says the drive is not IP-rated for dust or water and gives 2m drop protection. The research does not settle which is right, so check Crucial's current specification before you rely on the rating.
Owner and reviewer feedback is positive on this point. Reviewers call the X10 compact, rugged and durable. TechRadar reports a plastic casing, though that comes from a single source. Because the ruggedness figures conflict and the casing is reportedly plastic, treat the drive as sturdy for travel rather than as a proven outdoor tool.
Security3/10
Security is the weakest area, and the sources disagree. TechRadar says encryption is software only. Dongknows lists none. Basic Tutorials lists AES 256-bit. The 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password is stated for the X10 Pro, not the X10.
Owners and reviewers raise the same issue: the one recurring complaint is no hardware encryption. If you need password-protected hardware encryption on the drive itself, the research gives no firm confirmation that the X10 has it. Confirm with Crucial before buying.
Compatibility and support5/10
The research lists a USB-C interface and nothing else, so USB-A use is not covered here. It also does not cover Linux or phone support. The drop to Gen 2 speeds on Mac, PS5 and Xbox is worth noting for anyone who plans to share the drive between a PC and a console.
The warranty is 3 years. Crucial's support page states there are no firmware updates at this time, and no software or security support end date has been announced.
Who it suits
With reads near 2,100MB/s and a Gen 2x2 interface, it suits people who move large files between a compatible PC and the drive and want that speed. Reviewers also say it undercuts the earlier X10 Pro 2TB launch price and punches above its price, which counts in its favour for budget-minded buyers. The disputed encryption, the conflicting ruggedness figures and the Gen 2 fallback on other hosts all argue for checking the details first. Anyone who needs confirmed drive-level security or consistent speed across Mac and consoles has reason to look elsewhere.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

- Reviewers say it offers good value and undercuts the earlier X10 Pro 2TB launch price.
- Reviewers describe it as compact, rugged and durable.
- The recurring complaint is the lack of hardware encryption.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need confirmed password-protected hardware encryption on the drive
- Mac, PS5 or Xbox users who want full Gen 2x2 speeds
- Anyone who needs a confirmed IP rating, as one reviewer disputes it
