New to UPS units? What they are and what to look for

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a battery box that keeps your equipment running for a few minutes during a power cut and protects it from surges.

Do you need a UPS? Worth it for a NAS, home server or router, so a power cut doesn't corrupt files or drop your connection. Not needed for laptops, which have their own battery.

What to look for

  • Enough watts for everything you'll plug in, plus some spare
  • A USB connection so your NAS can shut down safely
  • Pure sine wave output for sensitive equipment

Pros and cons

+ pros

  • 900W rating leaves wide headroom over a 100-150W load
  • Listed 90 minutes at 80W and 35 minutes at 180W
  • LCD shows input and output voltage and load

− cons

  • No USB HID or network port named by manufacturer
  • Topology not stated; simulated sine wave in battery mode
  • Input voltage and outlet details conflict between sources

The full review

Where it fits

The SK1500 is a 1500VA / 900W rated battery backup from SKE Smart Key Energy. The benchmark for this review is a NAS, router and switch drawing roughly 100-150W. On the rating alone, 900W leaves a wide margin over that load. The harder questions are about topology, connectivity and mains compatibility, because the manufacturer leaves several of them unstated.

Capacity and runtimeCapacity 8/10Runtime and battery 7/10

The manufacturer lists runtime at several loads: 3 hours at 40W, 90 minutes at 80W, 35 minutes at 180W, 22 minutes at 260W and 8 minutes at 360W. A 100-150W load sits between the 80W and 180W entries. The manufacturer doesn't list a figure for that range, so the exact time is unknown. The 8 minutes at 360W shows how quickly runtime shortens as load rises.

The battery is two 12V 9Ah lead-acid cells, giving 24V. The research doesn't say whether the battery is user-replaceable. The warranty covers the battery for one year and the machine for two.

Owner feedback points the same way on heavy loads. One related SKE model is reported to run for about 10 minutes under full load. A single source puts 16% of ratings as saying capacity was insufficient for them. With a 900W rating and a runtime table that falls away at higher draws, this unit suits a light, steady load more than a loaded desk or rack.

Topology and waveform4/10

SKE doesn't state the topology. Third-party sources conflict, describing it as line-interactive, standby or offline. The only waveform detail comes from a third-party page for the related GP1500 model, which lists a simulated sine wave in battery mode. The same source gives a transfer time of 4-8ms typical and 13ms maximum. Those figures belong to a related model, not confirmed for the SK1500.

Because the topology is unconfirmed, and the simulated sine wave is listed only for the related GP1500 model, anyone with equipment that is sensitive to battery-mode waveform should check the SK1500's output with SKE or the seller. Owners do mention automatic voltage regulation, with an LCD that shows input voltage, output voltage and load. In battery mode the unit emits a beeping alarm every 6-10 seconds.

NAS and server integration3/10

The manufacturer names an LCD, an alarm and UPS management software. It doesn't name a USB HID interface or a network port. That leaves no stated basis for automatic shutdown with Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS or NUT. SKE doesn't list it, which is different from saying it is absent. Anyone who plans to rely on a clean shutdown signal should confirm the connection with SKE or the seller first.

Outlets, voltage and build3/10

The sources disagree on outlets. The manufacturer's product page for the 3.0 version shows 8 outlets: 6 battery-backed with surge protection and 2 surge-only. The 2.0 variant shows 4 battery-backed and 4 surge-only. Check which version is being sold before counting sockets. The research doesn't state the socket type.

Voltage needs the same care. The Amazon UK listing gives the input as 230V, while the manufacturer states 110/120Vac. These two statements can't both be right for a UK buyer, so confirm the rating on the exact unit before connecting anything to it.

What owners say

Owners praise the automatic voltage regulation and the LCD readout. They also mention a lower price than APC and a durable build, with 89% liking it in an aggregator figure that is unverified. On the negative side, a tail of ratings from a single source reports reliability problems. The short runtime under full load and the capacity complaints appear too.

Verdict

The SK1500 offers a large rated output and a helpful display, and the runtime table gives useful guidance at light loads. It leaves too much unstated for a buyer who wants an automated shutdown setup. Topology, USB connectivity, socket type and input voltage all need checking. For a small, light network stack where those points can be confirmed, it is a reasonable candidate. Without that confirmation, the gaps outweigh the headline wattage.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners like the automatic voltage regulation and the LCD showing input and output voltage and load.
  • Owners cite a lower price than APC and a durable build, though the satisfaction figure is unverified.
  • Runtime is short under full load, reported at about 10 minutes on a related SKE model.
  • A tail of ratings from a single source reports reliability problems and insufficient capacity.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need confirmed USB HID support for automatic NAS or server shutdown
  • Buyers who want a stated pure sine or online double-conversion output
  • Buyers who can't confirm the 230V input and UK socket type before purchase
