The full review

Where it fits

The BV650I is a 650 VA / 375 W line-interactive UPS from APC's Easy UPS range. The specifications point to a small load: a router, a modem, a switch and perhaps a small NAS. A load of about 100-150W sits well inside a 375 W rating, so the capacity suits that kind of setup. It does not suit a rack of servers.

Capacity and outletsCapacity 6/10UK outlets and build 5/10

APC lists six IEC C13 outlets, all battery-backed. None are surge-only, so everything plugged in keeps running on battery during an outage. That is useful when the load is spread across several small devices. The research does not give a surge protection rating or a warranty length for the UK model, so check both on the listing before buying.

Topology and waveform5/10

The BV650I is line-interactive and uses automatic voltage regulation (AVR). The manufacturer's US-market 120V BV650 page describes the output on battery as a stepped approximation to a sine wave. That page is for a different SKU, and the research does not confirm the same waveform for the UK model. Treat the waveform as likely stepped but unverified. If your equipment is sensitive to output waveform, confirm the UK datasheet before you commit.

Runtime and battery5/10

APC quotes 10 minutes at 120 W. With a 375 W rating, that figure is for a modest load. The research gives no runtime at half load. Ten minutes gives a window for a controlled shutdown if your NAS or server is set up to trigger one, but it will not ride out a long outage. One third-party site complains of short runtime under heavy load.

The battery is sealed lead-acid. APC's listing shows a replacement battery as available. It does not say the battery is user-replaceable, so do not assume a simple swap at home.

NAS and server integration4/10

The research lists no USB port and says nothing about compatibility with Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS or NUT. The manufacturer pages in the research do not confirm it either way. If automatic shutdown is the main reason for buying, check the UK product page or the listing for a data port and supported software before you order.

Owner feedback

Feedback is thin and partly from other variants. The main complaint is that the alarm cannot be silenced or muted. That is a real irritation if the unit sits in a living space or a quiet home office. One review of the Schuko variant praises it for keeping a router and modem online, which matches the capacity and runtime figures. Idle power draw draws criticism too, but that comes from similar models and not the UK SKU, so it is a caution and not a confirmed fault.

Availability

The manufacturer page says the model will be discontinued on 31 Dec 2026 and replaced by the BVR650I. An earlier snapshot of the same page gives a 2023 discontinuation date. The two dates conflict, and the research does not settle which is right. Before buying, check whether the BVR650I is the better option.

Verdict

The BV650I is a small, low-capacity UPS aimed at network gear and light loads. Its 375 W rating and six battery-backed IEC outlets suit a router, switch and small NAS. The gaps are the unconfirmed waveform and the missing NAS integration details for the UK model, plus the short runtime at higher loads. Buy it for keeping a router and modem alive, and verify the data connection before relying on it for automatic shutdown.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • The alarm cannot be silenced or muted, which owners find annoying.
  • It keeps a router and modem online through outages, according to a Schuko variant review.
  • Runtime is short under heavy load, according to one third-party site.
  • Idle power draw is criticised on similar models, though not confirmed for the UK SKU.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need confirmed automatic NAS or server shutdown over USB
  • Anyone who needs a confirmed pure sine wave output
  • Owners with loads well above 150W who need longer runtime
