Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro)
7.1out of 10verdict: good, not the best

The UDM-Pro suits homelabbers and small offices that want routing, firewalling, IDS/IPS and VPN in one UniFi OS device. It is a good fit if you already run, or plan to run, other UniFi products.

New to firewalls? What they are and what to look for

A firewall is a box that sits between your internet connection and your network and controls what traffic can come in and out. Most home routers already include a simple one.

Do you need a firewall? Most homes don't need a separate firewall. It's for people who run services from home, want to separate smart-home devices from their computers, or want detailed control and logs.

What to look for

  • Enough speed for your broadband with security features switched on
  • Whether core features need a paid subscription
  • A good record of security updates

The full review

Where it fits

The UDM-Pro is a gateway running UniFi OS. It bundles the UniFi Application Suite: Network, Protect, Access, Talk and Connect. That makes it a sensible centre for a homelab or small office that wants one management system across routing, cameras and door access. If you want a standalone firewall on open-source software, the research gives no sign this is that kind of product.

Throughput8/10

Ubiquiti lists 3.5+ Gbps routing with IDS/IPS enabled. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independent test. The research found no firewall-only figure, and VPN throughput is not published. Taken at face value, the IPS rating sits well above a single gigabit line, so inspection should not be the limiting factor on a gigabit connection. Treat that as headroom on paper until independent numbers appear.

Ports and networking7/10

The port layout is nine RJ45 GbE ports, eight LAN and one WAN, plus two SFP+ 10G ports, one LAN and one WAN. No 2.5GbE port is listed. With eight gigabit LAN ports and a single 10G LAN port, it suits a modest wired network with one fast link, rather than many multi-gig devices.

The routing feature list is broad. It supports VLAN and subnet-based segmentation, policy-based WAN and VPN routing, multi-WAN load balancing, LACP, OSPF and BGP.

Owners do report SFP+ quirks, specifically with high-wattage modules and with WAN failover. If you plan to use the SFP+ WAN port, or a power-hungry module, check compatibility before you commit.

Software and VPN8/10

VPN support is wide: WireGuard as both server and client, OpenVPN, L2TP and IPsec site-to-site. Core features need no subscription, so the firewall, routing and VPN work without a recurring fee.

Ubiquiti sells an optional CyberSecure add-on, billed annually per unit. It is optional, and the research does not tie any core feature to it. A separate optional five-year coverage plan covers replacement and priority support. It does not cover software updates.

Stability, support and security5/10

Owner feedback is mixed. Complaints include connectivity loss and system freezes, and support that is slow or hard to reach. Some owners praise long-term reliability. Because of the support complaints, it is relevant that the optional five-year plan includes priority support, though the research does not say how well it works.

The research includes a community thread on a firmware release, 5.0.16, and a firmware compatibility report from a third-party vendor. It does not include an advisory history or fix times, so it says nothing firm about how quickly Ubiquiti patches security issues. Check the release notes and advisories before buying.

Running costs7/10

Ubiquiti lists a maximum power consumption of 33W. That is a ceiling, not a measured load figure, and the research gives no idle number. A community thread on idle power for UniFi devices exists, but the research does not report its figures. If power draw matters to you, look at that thread. The lack of a required subscription keeps ongoing costs predictable.

Who it suits

On paper this is a capable gateway: 3.5+ Gbps IDS/IPS, 10G SFP+, VLANs, multi-WAN and WireGuard, with no subscription for core features. The weak spots are the owner reports of freezes and slow support, the SFP+ quirks and the missing security-advisory detail. It fits someone who values the UniFi ecosystem and can troubleshoot their own network.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Support is often described as slow or hard to reach.
  • Some owners report connectivity loss and system freezes.
  • SFP+ ports can be awkward with high-wattage modules and WAN failover.
  • Other owners praise its long-term reliability.
Who should skip it
  • Buyers who need 2.5GbE ports on the gateway itself
  • Anyone who depends on fast vendor support
  • Users who want open-source firewall software
