New to Wi-Fi routers and mesh systems? What they are and what to look for
A router connects your home to the internet and creates your Wi-Fi network. Mesh systems use several units around the house for stronger signal everywhere.
Do you need a Wi-Fi router? Your broadband provider gives you one, but a better router can fix weak Wi-Fi, slow speeds in far rooms and frequent drop-outs.
What to look for
- Wi-Fi 6 or newer
- Mesh if your home is large or has thick walls
- Regular security updates from the maker

The full review
Where it fits
The MR80X is a single MERCUSYS router sold as AX3000. There are no extra nodes in the box. It has one gigabit WAN port and gigabit LAN ports. That points it at a small home network on a gigabit-class connection, not a multi-gig setup.
Wireless
The router is dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), compatible with 11ac/a/b/g/n. The rated speeds are 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It supports 160 MHz channels and 1024-QAM. Smart Connect is listed. None of the sources show a 6E or tri-band version, so this is a plain dual-band design.
For coverage, MERCUSYS gives four 5 dBi fixed omnidirectional antennas and beamforming. It doesn't list a rated coverage area. With no manufacturer figure, you can't size it against a floor plan from the specs alone. The antennas are fixed, and the router is a single unit with no nodes included.
Wired ports5/10
The WAN port is a single gigabit port. The datasheet lists three gigabit LAN ports. The V6 product page lists five, so the LAN count depends on the hardware revision. Check which revision a listing sells before you buy. No source shows a 2.5GbE or 10GbE port.
Owners flag the port count as a complaint. With three LAN ports, a PC, a NAS and one more wired device fill the router, and anything extra needs a switch.
Software and security7/10
Security options include WPA3-SAE (which needs client support), WPA/WPA2 Enterprise, an SPI firewall and IP/MAC binding. There are guest networks on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
The router lists OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and IPsec as server and client options. The V4 product page confirms the VPN server line. Other listed features are parental controls, QoS, IPv6 and IPTV tag VLAN. The VLAN feature the research names is the IPTV tag type, and no other VLAN options are listed.
The router is also listed as EasyMesh compatible. One unverified owner claim says it has no mesh support, which conflicts with that listing. The sources give no firmware update history, so the update record is unknown.
What owners say
Owner and reviewer feedback is mostly about price and stability. The router is described as very affordable and budget-friendly. Reports call it stable and reliable. One unverified buyer quote mentions stable connections with more than ten devices.
The complaints are specific. Owners miss a repeater mode. They dislike having only three LAN ports. They note there are no wall-mount holes, so it suits a shelf or desk. The Amazon UK listing shows a 3-year warranty.
Who it suits
With Wi-Fi 6 at 160 MHz, a VPN server and guest networks listed, it suits a buyer who wants those features in a single affordable router. The lack of a rated area and of nodes in the box means larger homes have no manufacturer figure to rely on. The gigabit-only ports suit a typical gigabit broadband line but give no headroom beyond it. If you want a repeater mode, wall mounting or more than three wired devices, owner reports suggest looking elsewhere.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners and reviewers describe it as very affordable and budget-friendly.
- Reports call it stable and reliable, with one unverified quote about steady connections with 10+ devices.
- Common complaints are no repeater mode, only three LAN ports and no wall-mount holes.
- One unverified claim says it lacks mesh support, though the specs list EasyMesh compatibility.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who want 2.5GbE or 10GbE wired ports
- People who need many wired connections without adding a switch
- Owners of larger homes who want a mesh kit with nodes in the box
